About the Organization

Third Plateau is an impact-focused consulting firm that works with philanthropy, nonprofits, and communities to help build the systems and structures needed for meaningful change. The organization has also been recognized by Fast Company as one of its Best Workplaces for Innovators.

How the Team Works

The firm is grounded in the belief that durable social progress takes more than good intentions. The challenges it addresses are deeply connected, complex, and not solvable through quick solutions alone. Third Plateau partners with philanthropists, foundations, and nonprofit leaders who are committed to that long-term work and need a partner with the ability to design strong strategies and carry them through. Candidates are encouraged to explore the company’s values and approach.

Role Overview

As part of its democracy-related portfolio, Third Plateau oversees a pooled fund that supports protection infrastructure for pro-democracy civil society organizations and actors across the ideological spectrum. Since launching in 2024, the fund has distributed more than $20 million in this area. The organization is hiring a Development Manager to help drive the fund’s next stage of growth as annual fundraising goals rise substantially over the coming years.

In this role, you will support fundraising progress toward budget targets by researching donors, identifying and helping cultivate prospects, strengthening development systems and policies, contributing to grant proposals and reporting, and coordinating work across multiple development streams. You will also help shape the fund’s longer-term development strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Fund Director to refine and carry out an individual and foundation fundraising strategy aligned to the fund’s mission.
  • Coordinate the work of the fund team and external partners who manage donor relationships and fundraising activity.
  • Help the Fund Director prepare for and communicate progress to the fund’s committees on development and fundraising updates.
  • Work collaboratively with or delegate to the Development and Grants Associate to complete development tasks.
  • Maintain relationships with small and mid-sized donors, including cultivation and stewardship as needed.
  • Manage the daily donor pipeline, covering prospect identification, outreach, solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship of current and prospective supporters.
  • Support ongoing communications with existing and potential funders.
  • Join fundraising meetings with the Fund Director when needed.
  • Perform prospect research and keep the prospect list current.
  • Prepare thorough meeting briefs and donor profiles ahead of meetings.
  • Work with the Associate and Director to draft, revise, and submit grant proposals and reports.
  • Make sure fundraising materials, proposals, reports, and supporting financial documents are completed and sent on schedule.
  • Develop and update fundraising materials.
  • Maintain the development calendar, including proposal and reporting deadlines.
  • Manage donor databases, keep records accurate, and improve system functionality where possible.
  • Work with the fiscal sponsor team and Associate to track gifts, handle donor follow-up, and ensure thank-you acknowledgments are sent.

What You Need

  • 7 to 9 years of relevant experience in nonprofit or fundraising work, plus a bachelor’s degree or comparable experience.
  • Background on a development team raising funds from foundations and/or individual donors.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
  • Advanced web research ability.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to handle several fixed deadlines at once.
  • Experience leading multiple projects at the same time while maintaining strong quality.
  • Prior experience managing donor relationships.
  • A professional, approachable style suited to regular contact with donors.
  • Comfort using Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel and PowerPoint, along with Airtable or similar CRM systems.

Preferred Background

  • Experience writing grants and supporting fundraising efforts.
  • Working knowledge of budgets and nonprofit finance.
  • Experience with donor management software and platforms.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit work related to U.S. democracy strengthening and/or civil society protection.

Benefits and Perks

  • Remote-first work model.
  • Flexible and generous paid time off.
  • Employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees, with employer contributions toward dependent coverage.
  • Employer-paid short-term and long-term disability coverage, plus life insurance.
  • Employer HSA contribution of up to $850.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts, including FSA, DCFSA, and commuter benefits.
  • Home office support of $550 initially, plus $250 each year after that.
  • $110 per month for cell phone and home internet costs.
  • 13 weeks of paid parental and medical leave.
