About Phorest

Phorest Salon Software serves more than 11,000 premium independent hair and beauty salons across Ireland, the UK, Germany, Australia, Finland, the USA, Canada, the UAE, and the Netherlands. Its platform supports millions of consumer appointments each month and powers the full salon journey through desktop salon software, a native staff app, online booking, and bespoke white-label mobile apps.

The business is growing its payments product line, supporting both online and in-salon payment experiences for thousands of businesses every day. This role sits within the Pay Pillar, which is made up of three teams, and will help strengthen and scale the payments infrastructure behind those products.

The Role

As Engineering Manager for Pay, you will guide a team of engineers while helping shape the broader direction of the pillar. The role combines people leadership, technical guidance, execution support, and cross-functional collaboration. You will spend time coaching, removing blockers, and enabling the team to deliver reliably, while also contributing hands-on where appropriate.

You will work with the Head of Engineering and Product counterparts to refine strategy, align priorities, and coordinate with other teams where responsibilities overlap. A strong focus is expected on operational stability, observability, escalation handling, and sustainable delivery practices.

Key Responsibilities

You will be expected to develop the team, support delivery, and improve the reliability of payments systems while keeping business goals in focus.

People Leadership

  • Guide, support, and grow an engineering team in the Pay Pillar.
  • Create an environment that encourages learning, growth, transparency, and strong engagement.
  • Take part in hiring, onboarding, and shaping a diverse and inclusive team.

Technical Direction and Delivery

  • Offer clear technical leadership with an emphasis on scalability, maintainability, and sound engineering practices.
  • Work with the Principal Engineer to address technical priorities and challenges.
  • Step in hands-on when needed by reviewing code, supporting architecture decisions, and helping the team deliver complex distributed systems.

Collaboration Across Teams

  • Work closely with Product Managers, Designers, and other engineering groups to deliver connected, high-quality solutions.
  • Ensure engineering decisions support business objectives and smooth payment experiences for customers.

Operational Excellence

  • Lead observability efforts, including defining and meeting service level objectives.
  • Introduce and maintain monitoring practices that surface issues early.
  • Build clear escalation paths and promote dependable operational habits within the team.

Planning and Process Improvement

  • Drive delivery of major technical initiatives without compromising quality.
  • Spot inefficiencies, refine workflows, and encourage strong software delivery practices.
  • Keep senior engineering leadership informed on progress, direction, and issues that need support.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of proven leadership impact in a similar role with direct reports.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong object-oriented software design experience, with about 5 years of professional exposure in languages such as Java, Kotlin, or Ruby.
  • Background in building scalable, resilient systems, preferably in fintech.
  • Ability to shape team strategy, set clear goals and roadmaps, and deliver predictably and sustainably.
  • Comfort coaching team members, setting expectations clearly, and giving regular feedback.
  • Track record of strong partnerships with product peers and external stakeholders such as payment providers or third-party vendors.
  • Strategic thinking and strong communication skills in a fast-moving, high-autonomy environment.
  • Experience working with Agile teams and improving the overall development lifecycle.
  • Ability to support individual growth and career development while encouraging teamwork and collaboration.
  • Strong focus on quality, efficiency, value delivery, and waste reduction.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tooling.

Benefits

  • Private healthcare, two Wellness Days, an employee assistance program, and access to a free online GP service.
  • Competitive compensation, Employee Share Purchase Scheme, pension, life assurance, and income protection.
  • Bike-to-work support and tax saver transport tickets.
  • Two weeks of leave for fertility treatment, pregnancy loss, and menopause support.
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity benefits.
  • Access to learning resources, development programmes, and online learning tools.
  • Three moving days for employees who are relocating.
