Laboratory Technician

About the Role

ALS Environmental in Hamilton, New Zealand is looking for a Laboratory Technician to join its Organic Team. The organisation works across scientific testing and data-led insights with the aim of supporting a healthier future.

This position follows a Monday to Friday schedule, offering 30 hours per week with the option to extend up to 40 hours depending on business needs. It is best suited to someone who is detail-oriented, has a solid understanding of chemistry, brings a safety-first mindset, and enjoys a busy laboratory setting.

What You’ll Do

• Carry out analytical work in accordance with ALS quality work instructions and QA/QC standards.
• Plan and prioritise daily tasks so work is completed efficiently and turnaround targets are met.
• Finish analyses within the required timelines and in line with applicable analytical standards.
• Spot unusual sample results, behaviour, or sample characteristics and escalate them to the Supervisor.
• Carry out equipment calibration when needed and use only equipment that has been verified.
• Perform calculations related to analytical sample preparation.
• Keep the laboratory tidy and maintain strong housekeeping standards.
• Monitor and replenish consumables needed for assigned work.
• Support other laboratory tasks as required.

What the Role Requires

• At least 1 year of relevant laboratory experience; a degree or diploma is preferred.
• Sound chemical knowledge and strong analytical capability.
• Excellent accuracy and careful attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively on your own as well as within a team.
• Strong planning, organisation, and problem-solving abilities.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• A customer-oriented approach and a positive attitude toward safety.
• Capability to perform well in the required technical assessments.

• Ensure all testing and duties follow ALS quality systems and procedures.
• Keep records accurate and make sure instrument maintenance is current.
• Protect the integrity of data and uphold sound laboratory practices at all times.

• Understand and comply with ALS HSE policies and laboratory safety rules.
• Take proper precautions when handling samples with unknown hazards.
• Report unsafe behaviours and environmental risks, and help address them.
• Contribute actively to a strong safety and sustainability culture.
• Follow all relevant occupational health and safety laws.
