Role Overview

The Quality Technologist role focuses on building, maintaining, and improving food safety and quality systems so they meet customer requirements, third-party standards, and applicable legislation.

This position reports to the Quality Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and sustain product specifications and quality standards for finished goods, including use of customer systems such as Micros, Hamilton Grant, FIND, and similar platforms.
  • Create and keep up internal factory specifications.
  • Manage document control and maintain the quality management system.
  • Revise procedures, check sheets, and related documents when changes are needed due to improvement work, audits, or customer expectations.
  • Support the Quality Manager with the internal audit programme to confirm the quality system remains compliant.
  • Take part in external audits covering food safety and quality for customers, regulators, BRC, the Department of Agriculture, and other authorities.
  • Make sure full traceability is preserved throughout the process and complete traceability exercises when requested for audits or by customers.
  • Oversee raw material, in-process, and finished product checks and verification, working with production to resolve issues as they arise.
  • Run microbiological, chemical, and physical testing programmes in line with the agreed schedule and budget.
  • Carry out finished product and raw material micro testing, product chemical analysis, and daily organoleptic assessment panel activities.
  • Record and investigate non-conformances quickly and thoroughly, involving the right teams to identify root causes.
  • Investigate customer complaints with production and maintenance teams, agree corrective actions, and help prevent repeat issues.
  • Control quarantined product while protecting traceability and product safety, and coordinate with other departments on rework or alternative product destinations.
  • Manage shelf-life assessment work for chilled and frozen products as required.
  • Work with the New Product Development team to support smooth introduction of new products into production.
  • Maintain due diligence and audit records accurately.
  • Compile technical data to identify trends and support corrective action where needed.
  • Use trend data and statistical analysis from KPIs to support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Implement quality improvements across manufacturing and wider business processes.
  • Organise calibration records for factory and testing equipment on site.
  • Ensure pest control arrangements are maintained by working with the external contractor and keeping the related records and online system updated.
  • Be aware that responsibilities may change over time in line with business needs.
  • Some travel will be required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A recognised diploma in a food-related discipline, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Ideally, at least 1 year of QA/QC experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to stay effective under pressure.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
