Software Engineer, Java

Overview

Rockstar Games builds high-end entertainment experiences and is looking for a Software Engineer with strong hands-on development skills. You’ll join an inclusive, fast-moving environment where you can learn alongside highly skilled colleagues while contributing to ambitious, large-scale creative work.

This is a permanent, full-time, in-office role located in Rockstar’s game development studio in Dundee, Scotland.

About the team

The Information Systems group develops and supports production software used across all game development disciplines. Their tools help teams manage tasks, track defects with console integration, run distributed video recording, and produce reporting and analytics solutions.

Responsibilities

• Build and deliver solutions that support the pace and complexity of game development.
• Help shape and improve the team’s software design standards.
• Work closely with technology teams across Rockstar’s studios worldwide.
• Develop a deep understanding of the existing systems and adopt new technologies to keep applications evolving.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of professional experience developing backend systems in Java.
• Strong Java expertise, covering both low-level tuning and broader architectural design.
• Advanced experience with Spring Boot and JPA/Hibernate.
• Demonstrated ability to design and scale REST APIs.
• Good knowledge of MySQL or another major relational database, including query optimization.
• Practical experience with Apache Kafka and change data capture pipelines.
• Ability to profile and troubleshoot Java performance issues.
• Comfort working in Linux environments, along with strong communication and production support capabilities.

Preferred skills

The following are helpful extras, but not mandatory:

• Exposure to directed acyclic graphs and graph databases.
• Experience with media tools such as FFMPEG.
• Familiarity with source control, CI/CD platforms, and build automation.
• Background in service-oriented architectures and multi-tier server applications.
• Experience with caching systems, Spring Cloud, or Swagger.
• Knowledge of data warehousing tools such as Snowflake or Apache Doris.
• Exposure to Debezium.
