About the organisation

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) partners with 15 National Boards to run the national regulatory framework for health professionals. Its public protection role is to make sure only practitioners with the right skills, qualifications, and knowledge are registered to deliver safe care. Ahpra also aims to maintain a culturally safe workplace that reflects the diversity of the communities it serves.

About the unit

The Criminal Offences and Litigation Unit handles and investigates offence matters under the National Law. The team collaborates with legal, regulatory, operational, and external agency contacts to deliver thorough, timely investigations that support Ahpra’s public protection mandate.

About the role

This ongoing Inspector position offers the chance to manage your own portfolio of investigations into alleged criminal offences under the National Law. The work involves planning and carrying out investigations, interviewing witnesses and suspects, gathering and reviewing evidence, and preparing clear findings and recommendations.

Key duties

  • Take ownership of a caseload involving criminal offence investigations.
  • Plan investigation steps and follow them through from start to finish.
  • Interview witnesses and suspects as part of fact-finding.
  • Collect, evaluate, and manage evidence in line with investigative requirements.
  • Draft concise reports and make well-reasoned recommendations.
  • Work with internal stakeholders and outside agencies on sensitive and complex matters.
  • Apply relevant legislation accurately while handling administrative and time-sensitive workloads.

What you will need

The ideal candidate will bring strong investigative capability and the confidence to handle complicated, sensitive matters. You should be comfortable interpreting legislation, working across stakeholder groups, and producing high-quality written material. A Certificate IV in Government Investigations, or equivalent practical experience, is preferred.

Selection criteria

  • Certificate IV in Government Investigations or equivalent experience.
  • Background in criminal or regulatory investigations.
  • Experience interviewing witnesses and suspects.
  • Practical knowledge of evidence collection and handling.
  • Strong analytical ability.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities and deadlines in an administration-heavy environment.

Work location and arrangement

This is a full-time, ongoing role based in either Ahpra’s Perth office or Adelaide office. The position follows a hybrid working model with a 50/50 split between office and home working, subject to Ahpra’s hybrid and flexible working arrangements policy.

Benefits

  • Flexible working with a balanced office and home arrangement.
  • Supportive, collegial culture with an active social club.
  • Discounted health cover through Medibank Private.
  • Discounted gym memberships.
  • Modern open-plan workspaces in a central, 5-star rated building.
  • Annual salary of $118,551 plus superannuation.

Application requirements

Applicants need to submit a current resume and a cover letter of no more than two pages. The cover letter should address your experience conducting interviews and taking witness statements, your experience in criminal or regulatory investigations, and your interest in joining the Criminal Offences and Litigation Unit.

Eligibility

Applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit or visa. Work eligibility will be verified during recruitment.

Additional information

Ahpra will consider employment only after successful background checks, including pre-employment screening and criminal history checks. The organisation is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from people of all abilities, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and candidates who face disability or other diversity-related barriers. Candidates who need support or workplace access arrangements are encouraged to disclose them at the time of application. No agencies please.
