About EDCARTA

EDCARTA is a service-led organization that believes strong learning experiences can change lives. The team approaches instructional design as advocacy for learners, not just course production. Every decision begins with the question of what will help the learner feel confident, capable, and supported.

The company is seeking an Instructional Designer who works with empathy, pays close attention to the student journey, and balances thoughtful design with human warmth.

Role Summary

In this position, you will manage the full lifecycle of learning experience design for client programs. You will partner with subject-matter experts, program managers, and technology teams to turn complex material into clear, engaging, and accessible learning pathways. The role places the learner’s goals, context, challenges, and growth at the center of every design choice.

This is a remote role based in the United States, with a salary range of $70,000 to $80,000 per year. It sits at the intersection of education, service, and design, and is best suited to someone who sees those three disciplines as closely connected.

What You’ll Do

  • Keep the learner’s perspective, circumstances, and emotional experience at the heart of every design decision.
  • Create learner personas and journey maps to identify pain points before development begins.
  • Advocate for clarity, accessibility, and inclusive design across all deliverables.
  • Interview students to understand their experience and use that feedback to improve designs iteratively.
  • Turn subject expertise into precise, outcome-based learning objectives.
  • Work with SMEs to script, storyboard, and prototype courses, modules, and learning materials.
  • Use instructional design approaches such as backward design, spaced practice, and retrieval practice as appropriate for the audience.
  • Build formative and summative assessments that measure real skill and understanding, not simple recall.
  • Develop strong client relationships, set expectations clearly, and communicate proactively.
  • Lead working sessions that capture client knowledge while keeping learner needs central.
  • Receive feedback constructively and treat revisions as a normal part of the design process.
  • Deliver work on schedule with a high level of polish and full ownership of quality.
  • Take part in peer reviews and contribute templates, patterns, and lessons learned to the team.
  • Stay informed about learning experience design, educational technology, and adult learning research.
  • Help continuously improve the company’s standard for quality instructional design.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of instructional design experience in a professional setting or higher education.
  • Proven ability to create learner-centered experiences grounded in instructional theory.
  • A consistent record of prioritizing the learner and client experience, even when working under pressure.
  • Comfort working across functions with SMEs, project managers, and developers.
  • Experience with higher education LMS platforms such as Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, or comparable systems.
  • Ability to work with course shells, gradebooks, and content organization within institutional environments.
  • Flexibility to adapt design methods to each institution’s policies, workflows, technology stack, and academic culture.
  • Practical use of AI from an instructional design perspective.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain design choices to non-designers.
  • A master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Science, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent experience may be considered.

Values Fit

Skills can be taught more easily than values, so the company looks closely for candidates who naturally demonstrate empathy, service, curiosity, ownership, and humility.

  • Empathy first: You begin by understanding what someone is experiencing before deciding what to build.
  • Service orientation: You genuinely want to be helpful, not merely technically accurate.
  • Intellectual curiosity: You read, ask questions, and adjust your thinking when stronger evidence appears.
  • Ownership: You identify gaps proactively and take responsibility for closing them.
  • Humility: You remain open to critique and treat feedback as beneficial to the learner.

What We Offer

  • A mission-driven team focused on learning outcomes rather than only deliverables.
  • Meaningful client work aimed at improving student success.
  • A collaborative environment with peer review, shared resources, and ongoing professional development.
  • Competitive pay, a flexible and respectful work setting, and strong benefits.
  • The chance to help shape the future of instructional design at a growing company.
