Role overview
ARO Technology is hiring an experienced IT Operations Engineer to join its internal IT team. This position is suited to someone who enjoys tackling complex technical issues and wants to support the systems that help colleagues work effectively every day.
The role sits within the company’s internal environment and covers a wide mix of technologies, including Microsoft 365, Azure, identity and access management, networking, infrastructure, security tools, endpoints and core business systems. You will act as a dependable technical specialist and escalation point, balancing hands-on troubleshooting with a practical, service-oriented mindset.
This is a broad, multi-technology role rather than a single-platform specialist position. The ideal candidate will be confident identifying root causes, improving processes, documenting solutions and working closely with colleagues, application owners and external partners to keep internal IT services secure, stable and future-ready.
The role is hybrid, with a requirement to work on-site at one of the ARO offices three days per week. Occasional travel to other UK locations will also be needed. Candidates must be able to commute to the office and have their own transport.
Location and contract
Office locations include Liverpool, Ewloe, Cardiff, Farnborough, Aberdeen or Glasgow. The contract is permanent and the salary is up to £40,000.
Key responsibilities
- Handle a broad mix of internal IT incidents and service requests, including issues that need detailed investigation beyond first-line triage.
- Support Microsoft 365, Windows endpoints, identity and access management, networking, security tools, infrastructure and business applications.
- Serve as an escalation contact for colleagues and junior team members, helping spread knowledge and improve support quality.
- Contribute to better reliability, security, performance and usability across the internal IT environment.
- Keep systems well maintained through strong documentation, ticket ownership, communication and general platform hygiene.
- Support information security controls and work in line with ISO 27001-aligned practices and sound security standards.
- Build productive relationships across the business so Internal IT remains responsive, approachable and commercially aware.
- Deliver both remote and on-site technical assistance to internal users and teams, taking ownership of issues through to resolution or appropriate escalation.
- Diagnose problems across Windows 11, Microsoft 365 Apps, Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive and endpoint devices.
- Administer users, groups, permissions and access within Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, including joiner, mover and leaver processes.
- Manage endpoint build, deployment, configuration and compliance using Microsoft Intune and related tools.
- Investigate network issues involving DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VLANs, Wi-Fi, VPN and connectivity between endpoints, servers and cloud services.
- Support server and infrastructure services, including Windows Server 2022/2025, virtualised systems and backup/recovery monitoring.
- Work with security technologies such as Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Intune, conditional access and endpoint protection.
- Use ITSM processes and tools to manage tickets, record work, communicate progress and support ongoing service improvement.
- Partner with application owners, IT colleagues and third-party suppliers to resolve incidents, deliver changes and improve operations.
- Spot repeat issues, suggest practical fixes and help build a more resilient, scalable and user-friendly internal IT platform.
- Operate as part of an internal corporate IT function within an MSP environment, focusing on ARO’s own users, devices, systems and operational needs.
Requirements
Essential experience includes a background in IT support, infrastructure, operations or service desk work, with experience resolving more than just basic triage issues. You should have broad knowledge across endpoints, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, identity and access management, networking, infrastructure, backup, security tooling and business applications.
You should be comfortable supporting Windows 11, Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive, as well as administering Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID. Experience with users, groups, permissions, MFA, conditional access or similar access controls is expected.
Strong endpoint management knowledge is required, ideally including Microsoft Intune. You should also have practical networking troubleshooting skills covering DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, Wi-Fi and VPN connectivity.
Experience supporting Windows Server environments is important, ideally with Windows Server 2022 or 2025, plus virtualisation and core infrastructure services. The role also requires strong analytical and problem-solving ability, clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences, excellent customer service, and the ability to manage priorities and maintain ticket ownership in a busy environment.
You must also be willing to travel occasionally to ARO offices across the UK.
Desirable experience includes work with Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Purview, ServiceNow, Datto RMM, Veeam, Hyper-V, WatchGuard, Ubiquiti UniFi, Meraki or similar enterprise tools. Knowledge of Microsoft licensing, endpoint security baselines, patching, vulnerability management and IT asset management would be beneficial. Experience in an ITIL-aligned environment and relevant Microsoft, CompTIA, ITIL or equivalent certifications are also preferred.
