Role overview
The HM Prison and Probation Service is recruiting an Operational Support Grade for HMP Erlestoke. This is a hands-on, varied position that helps keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. The role combines desk-based duties with practical work around the prison estate.
What the role involves
You will support the day-to-day running of the prison as part of a collaborative team. Typical duties include security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, monitoring phone calls and CCTV, and carrying out movement-related tasks such as escorting vehicles across the prison grounds. The work can involve lifting, carrying and walking, so it is active as well as administrative.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The position is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well with others. A practical, common-sense approach is important in helping the prison run smoothly and safely.
Shift pattern and working style
Operational Support Grades work across a range of shifts, including weekends and night shifts, to ensure continuous support for prison operations. The role is fast-paced and requires flexibility.
Career development
This role offers valuable insight into how a prison functions and can open the door to other roles within the prison service. It may also provide a route to the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme. Training, development opportunities, and progression are part of the package.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £30,491. In addition to base pay, the role includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. You will also have access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional notes
Unlike prison officers, the role involves limited contact with prisoners, although occasional interaction may occur depending on the prison. This is an opportunity to contribute to public safety by supporting important work carried out every day in the prison system.
