About the Role
This full-time cleaner position is based at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia. The role supports the upkeep of the shipyard by keeping work areas organized, sanitary, and safe. It involves hands-on cleaning work in demanding environments, with a strong focus on safety, hygiene, and responsiveness to operational needs.
Key Duties
- Maintain cleanliness and order across shipyard areas to support a safe and productive workplace.
- Clean tanks, confined spaces, and bilges as part of routine site maintenance.
- Use pressure-washing equipment on components when required.
- Respond to landside spills and help restore safe conditions.
- Adapt to changing assignments and priorities based on production demands.
Working Conditions
- Work may be assigned on multiple shifts, and any shift may be required to meet production needs.
- Outdoor work is required throughout the year in all weather conditions.
- The job includes extensive walking, stepping, ladder use, and climbing.
- Work may take place at extreme heights and in small, tight, confined spaces.
- Relocation support is not provided.
- Telework is not available for this position.
- Travel is not required.
Requirements
- Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
- Must be capable of lifting at least 40 pounds.
- Must be able to perform overhead work.
- Must be willing to be clean-shaven in order to wear a respirator.
- Must be able to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to work at extreme heights.
- Must be able to work in confined spaces.
- Must be available for any shift as production needs change.
- Ability to take measurements is required, or the willingness to learn is expected.
- U.S. citizenship is required for this role.
- No security clearance is needed to begin work.
Preferred Background
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
