About the organization

Sarcoma Patient Advocacy Global Network (SPAGN) is an international network of 80 national patient advocacy groups focused on sarcomas. The organization brings together patient voices from around the world and collaborates with sarcoma specialists, researchers, healthcare professionals, industry partners and other stakeholders to advance research, improve care and treatment, and raise awareness among both policymakers and the public. SPAGN is registered in Germany.

Role overview

SPAGN is seeking a Communications & Content Manager to strengthen the network’s global visibility, engagement and overall impact. This role suits a communications professional who is comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities and contributing to an international virtual team.

The position is part-time, freelance and fully remote, with an estimated workload of 40–60 hours per month. The number of hours may vary depending on campaign demands and project activity.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, plan and coordinate a wide range of communication materials, including social media posts, website content, newsletters, blog articles, visual assets, graphics and occasional printed items such as brochures, roll-ups and posters.
  • Take the lead on planning and delivering SPAGN’s annual Sarcoma Awareness Month campaign in coordination with the Board, Executive Director, Project Manager, member organisations and other contributors.
  • Oversee SPAGN’s social media channels by managing content calendars, publishing regularly, engaging with audiences and tracking performance.
  • Partner with the Project Manager to maintain and improve the website, newsletters and other digital communication tools so they remain aligned with SPAGN’s communication priorities.
  • Support the blog team through editorial planning, contributor coordination, content guidance and publication scheduling.
  • Look for opportunities to broaden SPAGN’s reach, recognition and engagement among patients, advocates, healthcare professionals, researchers, industry stakeholders and policymakers.
  • Assist with communication and information sharing for member groups and contribute to activities that strengthen member engagement.

Required experience and qualifications

  • At least 3–5 years of experience in communications, communications management, public relations or a closely related field, preferably in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, a communications agency, a non-profit environment or patient advocacy.
  • Proven ability to build and execute communication strategies across several channels.
  • Strong project management background with experience coordinating multiple workstreams and stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing, editing and content development skills.
  • Hands-on experience producing visual communication materials and using design tools such as Canva or similar software.
  • Experience with medical or scientific writing and/or an educational background in life sciences, medicine, public health, healthcare, oncology or a related discipline is highly desirable.
  • Well-developed organisational skills and a strong eye for detail.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to turn organisational objectives into practical communications activity.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism when working across different cultures and professional backgrounds.
  • Ability to work autonomously, proactively and flexibly in a virtual international team.
  • Fluent written and spoken English; native-level fluency is not required, but professional and confident communication in English is essential.
  • Good command of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Genuine interest in patient advocacy, healthcare and improving outcomes for people affected by rare cancers.
  • International and multicultural work experience is an advantage.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally on a limited basis, typically up to two trips per year, for conferences, meetings and other SPAGN activities.

What SPAGN offers
