Role overview

Stratford District Council is looking for a Communications Manager to take the lead on how the organisation shares its message and engages with the local community.

This position is responsible for guiding Council’s communications across every channel, including media, digital platforms, community engagement, and internal communication. You will define the communication strategy, keep messaging consistent and easy to understand, and help residents see both what Council does and why it is important. The role also includes making sure customer service messaging and processes strengthen trust, accessibility, and effective first-contact resolution.

The job is a full-time, onsite role of 40 hours per week, based at Stratford District Council on Miranda Street, Stratford.

About you

The ideal candidate will hold a tertiary qualification in communications, marketing, or a closely related discipline, along with a strong commitment to purposeful communication that builds confidence and clarity.

You should bring substantial experience in leading communications activity, creating messaging and campaigns, handling media relationships, and using digital and social channels to reach a wide range of audiences. You must be comfortable advising senior leaders, working through complex matters, and turning technical or detailed information into clear public-facing content.

The Council values a diverse and inclusive workplace and strong partnerships with Mana Whenua. The preferred candidate will understand the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi in the work of the organisation and be willing to incorporate Te Ao Māori values and te reo Māori into their practice.

Why join us

Staff describe the workplace culture as one of the best parts of the job. The environment is positive, energetic, and friendly, with a strong focus on community and customer service. Working here also comes with professional development opportunities, a flexible working policy, support for te reo learning, regular health check opportunities, subsidised pool visits, an active social club, and free car parking.
