Role Overview
The City of Laurel, Mississippi is holding a civil service exam for an entry-level firefighter opening. The examination is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 8:00 a.m.
Anyone interested must submit an application and complete sign-up no later than Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. in order to take part in the testing process.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must hold a valid Mississippi driver’s license
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must be a U.S. citizen and a registered voter in the county of residence
- Must be able to clear a background investigation
- Must be able to pass the entry-level firefighter civil service examination
- Must be able to attend and successfully complete the Mississippi State Fire Academy

Compensation and Additional Earnings
The starting salary is $44,688.54 per year, plus benefits.
There is also additional earning potential through 11 paid holidays, equal to 88 hours annually, paid at an hourly rate of $16.21. In addition, up to 52 overtime hours may be available each year at an overtime rate of $24.32 per hour.
