Role overview
Peoples Group is seeking a Fraud Risk Analyst to work from its Toronto office. Candidates who are based outside the commuting area will need to relocate and live within a reasonable distance of the office. The role focuses on reviewing account holder, merchant, and transaction activity across several systems to spot, assess, and reduce fraud exposure. You will examine client and merchant activity, identify developing fraud patterns, share practical findings, and monitor card programs and partner activities such as EFT, Interac eTransfer, and Bill Pay so that risk stays within approved tolerance levels. The position also includes handling monitoring alerts, investigating signs of fraud in prepaid card portfolios, recommending mitigation actions, supporting client discussions when fraud metrics rise, helping improve fraud-related policies and procedures, and staying up to date on industry developments and best practices.
Day-to-day responsibilities
- Carry out detailed fraud reviews and investigations for account holders, merchants, and transactions across multiple internal systems.
- Analyze transaction processing for clients and merchants, uncover fraud patterns, and present clear remediation suggestions.
- Track card programs and ensure fraud and chargeback exposure remains within the company’s risk appetite limits.
- Review partner activity for products such as Electronic Funds Transfer, Interac e-Transfer, and Bill Pay to keep fraud risk within accepted thresholds.
- Handle network alerts and provide partners with practical fraud reduction guidance.
- Work through alerts from transaction monitoring tools, investigate suspicious signals in prepaid card portfolios, and recommend ways to reduce risk.
- Support client communication when fraud KRIs increase materially and work with clients on response and mitigation efforts.
- Help draft, update, and improve fraud risk policies, standard operating procedures, and related control documents.
- Stay informed about industry changes, emerging fraud methods, and current best practices, and assess how they may affect internal processes.
Qualifications and requirements
- 3 to 5 years of experience in fraud analysis and investigations.
- A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
- Strong analytical and investigative capability.
- Knowledge of fraud risks during onboarding for both merchant and consumer accounts.
- Solid understanding of fraud prevention methods, common fraud trends, and fraud typologies.
- Good working knowledge of payments, including Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Interac e-Transfer, Electronic Funds Transfer, and Bill Pay.
- Familiarity with fraud claims handling and recovery workflows.
- Experience working with regulatory compliance requirements related to fraud.
- Moderate to advanced Excel skills.
