Role overview
Dignity Group is seeking a seasoned and empathetic Funeral Director to work from Jennings Funeral Directors in Wolverhampton. This permanent full-time position pays £30,854.12 per year, plus ancillary payments for on-call duties. The role involves overseeing funeral arrangements and services, delivering a consistently high standard of care, and supporting families during a deeply difficult time. You will also represent the local brand and the wider organisation, helping to strengthen community relationships.
Why this role is important
This position calls for strong expertise in funeral operations, care of the deceased, and relevant legal and regulatory obligations. A solid understanding and respect for cultural and religious practices is essential. You will coordinate colleagues thoughtfully, take responsibility for service quality, and set a strong example in day-to-day work.
What you will do
As the central point of calm and professionalism in funeral care, you will help families feel informed, respected, and supported from the first conversation through to the day of the service and the follow-up afterward. That includes guidance on aftercare, ashes, memorialisation, and funeral plans.
- Direct funeral services with a high level of professionalism and precision.
- Hold pre-funeral briefings so all arrangements are clear and properly aligned.
- Take a consultative approach to help families understand their choices and possibilities.
- Work closely with arrangers, specialists, funeral directors, and care teams.
- Help manage diaries, resources, and records to keep operations running smoothly.
- Support coffin preparation, deceased care, and chapel responsibilities when needed.
- Coach and guide less experienced colleagues, share knowledge, and contribute to training and development.
- Support local outreach and brand visibility by building links with care homes, celebrants, and local religious and ethnic communities.
- Coordinate with service and client delivery teams to ensure smooth scheduling and seamless service execution.
Experience and knowledge needed
The ideal candidate will already have experience leading funerals, working with deceased individuals, and assisting bereaved families. You should understand funeral procedures as well as legal and regulatory requirements, communicate well, stay organised, and remain composed under pressure. The role also requires a respectful and compassionate manner, the physical ability to carry out manual handling tasks including coffin bearing, flexibility to work weekends and on-call shifts, and a full UK driving licence.
What the employer offers
This role includes a thorough induction and access to in-house development programmes, with the option to work toward a qualification through an apprenticeship pathway. Additional benefits include bonus potential, life assurance, an employee assistance programme for health and wellbeing support, annual leave of 30 to 33 days including Bank Holidays, and a contributory pension scheme.
Additional information
Applications may be closed or extended depending on response levels, so early submission is encouraged. Some roles may require background checks under FCA regulation. The employer also encourages applications from people of all backgrounds and will provide reasonable adjustments if needed to make the process more accessible.
