General Labourer

Job summary

The Labourer supports construction and maintenance work by carrying out a wide range of hands-on duties that keep projects moving efficiently. The role involves helping with site preparation, moving materials, demolition work, and general support for skilled trades. Success in this position depends on a strong work ethic, physical endurance, teamwork, and a willingness to work across different locations. The Labourer reports directly to the Site Supervisor and must be open to travel across British Columbia. Shifts may be extended, and overtime is common.

Key responsibilities

• Help prepare worksites by clearing debris and putting up temporary site structures such as scaffolding and barricades.
• Move, load, unload, and store building materials, tools, and equipment safely.
• Support tradespeople such as carpenters, masons, electricians, and plumbers by holding materials, operating equipment, and assisting with tasks as needed.
• Mix, pour, and spread concrete, and assist with placing and finishing work.
• Carry out demolition tasks safely and remove debris using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
• Use basic tools and machinery, including drills, saws, jackhammers, and compactors, under supervision.
• Follow all health and safety procedures and wear personal protective equipment at all times.
• Keep the work area clean and organized by removing waste and debris.
• Take on other duties assigned by the Site Supervisor or Project Manager.

Skills and qualifications

• Good physical condition and the ability to handle demanding manual work, including lifting heavy items and standing for long periods.
• Construction or labouring experience is an advantage, though not mandatory.
• Prior exposure to construction tools and machinery is preferred.
• Strong hand-eye coordination and the ability to follow directions accurately.
• Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
• Understanding of construction site safety practices and regulations.
• Dependable, punctual, and able to work well with others.

Work environment

This job is based primarily on construction sites and may involve noisy, dusty, or potentially hazardous conditions. The work can require lifting and carrying 50 pounds or more, climbing, balancing, walking, and other physically demanding activities. Employees may also work at heights, in confined areas, and in different weather conditions, including extended time outdoors. Typical shifts run 10 to 12 hours, and overtime should be expected.
