Position summary
This mid-level Mechanical Designer role sits within Kiewit Power Engineering’s drafting and design team in the power market. The position focuses on creating sketches, piping and instrument diagrams, and 3D equipment models for power plant systems. The work covers steam cycle systems, boiler feed and condensate, water treatment, fuel handling, hydraulic systems, heat transfer systems, conveying systems, and air and gas systems. The role also includes mentoring interns and recent graduates.
About the team
The Power district is part of a large engineering organization with experience across transportation, power, water/wastewater, mining, building, and oil, gas and chemical sectors. Its power group combines multiple disciplines and delivers engineering support across the project life cycle, including owner’s engineering, project development, detailed engineering and design, construction management, and plant services. The team works on gas-fired generation, power delivery, environmental retrofits, renewables and new technology, and water/wastewater projects across North America, with an emphasis on constructability, safety, cost effectiveness, and innovative design.
Location
This role is based in Calgary, Alberta.
Key duties
The Mechanical Designer will prepare technical drawings and 3D equipment models for power plant systems, verify design output against applicable codes, standards, contract terms, and company guidelines, and stay aligned with schedules and task deadlines. The position also requires coordination with other drafters, designers, and project team members to keep work moving smoothly and support overall project results.
Qualifications
Applicants should bring at least 3 years of relevant design experience and hold a bachelor’s degree in Drafting and Design or a related field. Strong working knowledge of basic computer tools such as MS Word, Excel, web browsers, and email is needed, along with familiarity with drafting platforms such as MicroStation, Autodesk, and SmartPlant.

The selected candidate must work safely, follow verbal and written instructions, and observe safety notices, equipment guidance, and company policies.
