About the role

This position is part of the Council’s Community Group, which brings together community-facing services including Hamilton Pool, Parks and Recreation, Hamilton City Libraries, and the city’s three main visitor attractions. The Parks and Recreation team looks after the care and ongoing improvement of Hamilton’s park network, helping ensure the city remains attractive, enjoyable, connected, and responsive to community needs.

Hamilton City Council is seeking an experienced, people-oriented Parks Landscapes Supervisor to guide the delivery of high-quality maintenance across the parks network. This is a practical leadership role where you will oversee crews and contractors, maintain service standards, and contribute to safe and well-kept public spaces for the community.

What you will do

You will lead day-to-day park maintenance delivery, support your team’s development, work with contractors and stakeholders, and help maintain a strong safety and service culture. Your work will also include planning seasonal workloads, monitoring performance, managing resources and records, carrying out inspections, and supporting emergency response and improvement initiatives.

Team leadership and capability building

  • Guide, encourage, and support crews so they can consistently produce quality work.
  • Provide regular coaching, feedback, and practical support to strengthen skills and performance.
  • Contribute to performance management and help maintain a positive, accountable team environment.
  • Foster open communication, team engagement, and a collaborative workplace culture.
  • Support the learning and development of Amenity Horticulture trainees.

Park service delivery

  • Organise and prioritise work schedules to meet operational requirements and seasonal demands.
  • Track the performance of teams and contractors to ensure quality, efficiency, and service standards are achieved.
  • Manage equipment, resources, scheduling, and accurate operational records.

Stakeholder and customer connection

  • Respond to customer queries and build productive relationships with contractors and other stakeholders.
  • Work closely with internal teams to support strong outcomes for the community.

Safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement

  • Inspect sites and identify maintenance needs and asset-related issues.
  • Champion health and safety practices and ensure work is completed in line with compliance requirements.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvement, project activity, and emergency response when needed.

Skills and experience

The ideal person will bring proven team leadership experience, confidence in coaching and performance support, and practical knowledge of parks, landscaping, or horticulture. You should be organised, comfortable balancing competing priorities, experienced in contractor oversight, and able to communicate clearly with a strong customer focus. A solid understanding of health, safety, and wellbeing practices is important, along with a proactive attitude and commitment to building a strong team culture.

Salary

The salary is circa $80,000, depending on skills and experience.

What we offer

  • A flexible working policy recognised with awards, offering choice in how you work.
  • Opportunities to continue developing professionally.
  • Two wellbeing days each year.
  • Free health insurance through Unimed, including hospital and surgery cover, plus discounted family membership rates.
  • Free annual health checks and flu vaccination.
  • The option to buy additional annual leave.
  • Reimbursement for eye tests and glasses costs.
  • Discounted access to local businesses such as gyms, cafes, dentists, hairdressers, and more.
