Role overview
The Probation Services Officer supports community safety by supervising and case managing offenders so they comply with the reporting obligations and conditions attached to community-based and reparation orders. The position also carries out court administration work for the office and plays an active role in building and sustaining community partnerships to support long-term community service projects.
Key capabilities
- Ability to plan and prioritise work so tasks are completed on time, both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills for working with internal and external stakeholders in a service-focused setting.
- Good awareness of confidentiality, sensitivity, and the need to comply with privacy and legislative requirements.
- Confident communication skills, including handling difficult conversations, resolving problems, and negotiating outcomes.
Other conditions and requirements
- No compulsory qualification is required for appointment, although graduates with a degree in human services fields will be considered favourably.
- The role may involve travel for official duties, and a current C class driver licence is required; in some locations it will be mandatory if identified as essential by the hiring panel.
- Anyone appointed permanently or temporarily must complete Certificate IV in Correctional Practice (Community). All related training and assessments must be finished within 12 months of starting, with certification obtained within 18 months.
- Training relevant to the role will be required, including urinalysis testing, court duties, and any other operational training needed for district service delivery as directed by the Delegate.
- Work in Community Corrections can involve exposure to material about offending behaviour, criminal activity, and other explicit, distressing, or offensive content.
- An employee assistance program is available for staff and their immediate family members, but applicants should consider their own resilience and coping strategies before taking on a role in this environment.
- A suitability pool may be created for repeated vacancies in the region and used for up to 12 months.
