Role Overview
This position supports the Store Manager with the day-to-day operation of the thrift store so that service remains smooth and uninterrupted. When needed, the role also functions as a Sales Associate.
Key Duties
- Greet customers and donors in a polite, helpful, and professional way.
- Safeguard donated goods and maintain their condition and integrity.
- Accurately process customer payments, including cash and debit transactions.
- Help support store budget goals by delivering consistent customer service.
- Carry out opening and closing duties according to store procedures when required.
- Sort, load, unload, pack, price, and store donated materials and raw goods.
- Use product knowledge to answer customer questions by phone or in person.
- Monitor store activity to help maintain security.
- Handle merchandise safely and in an organized manner, including stock rotation.
- Support inventory control through receiving, sorting, and pricing as directed.
- Assist with store presentation, including window displays, merchandise displays, and overall tidy maintenance.
- Restock inventory as instructed by the supervisor.
- Remove items from the sales floor when directed.
- Ensure donated items are sorted and processed correctly and meet quality standards.
- Keep the store clean, organized, and attractive by tidying, replenishing shelves, sweeping, dusting, and mopping as needed.
- Follow all store policies and procedures.
- Assist with cycle counts and inventory reconciliation.
- Deliver excellent service to guests and donors.
- Serve as Team Lead/Working Supervisor for Store Associates when the Store Manager is unavailable.
- Provide operational guidance and on-the-job training to staff when needed.
- Maintain a safe and healthy workplace in line with health and safety rules.
- Carry out other job-related duties as assigned.
Reporting and Working Relationships
This role reports to the Store Manager and has no direct reports. Internal contacts include NRO Administration, TS management, and staff. External contacts include donors, clients, and contractors.
Working Conditions
This is a permanent full-time role based in a normal retail store environment. The work involves regular physical effort, including stretching, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking, as well as lifting up to 30 pounds without assistance. The role also involves frequent exposure to dust, fumes, and temperature changes. Deadlines must be met consistently, and the position may involve frequent interpersonal conflict with guests, donors, vendors, and employees. Work can be repetitive at times.
Qualifications and Experience
- Willingness to learn about and support The Salvation Army’s mission and how it relates to the role.
- Ability to work in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, as well as the organization’s safety policies and procedures.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Completion of some high school is required.
- At least two years of experience in a store or warehouse setting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work well in a team.
- Physically able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently without help, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing merchandise.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Must be able to pass the applicable screening and background checks to the organization’s satisfaction.
Compensation
The intended hiring range is $18.50 to $23.13, with a maximum of $27.76. Placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
