It is designed to provide a solid entry point into power trading and portfolio management.
You will partner with traders, portfolio managers, and quantitative analysts to create, develop, and put into use data-led models that support trading approaches, generation dispatch, fuel buying, hedging decisions, and risk control across electricity and gas markets. The role also provides direct exposure to physical and financial energy markets, large-volume data systems, and practical AI use in a live trading setting.
Electricity and Gas Trading Optimisation

- Work with internal and external stakeholders to improve portfolio outcomes and capture value.
Portfolio Management
- Assist with portfolio management work across the power and gas businesses.
- Support fuel purchasing, hedging activities, retail pricing, and exposure reviews.
- Contribute to long-term decarbonisation objectives and related development planning.
Market Analysis

- Stay updated on market intelligence and emerging trends that may influence trading choices.
Business Agility
- Own the routine upkeep, documentation, calibration, and testing of optimisation tools and systems to protect data quality and reliability.
- Turn analysis, ideas, and planning into practical tools, dashboards, and working processes.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines for market, fundamental, and alternative datasets.
- Share regular performance and market-condition updates with management.
Requirements
- A degree in Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Finance, or a closely related field.
- Hands-on experience with pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, SQL, data engineering concepts, Databricks, and time-series modelling.
- Useful additional knowledge includes optimisation methods such as linear programming and mixed-integer programming, as well as data visualisation tools like Power BI or Tableau.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP will be an advantage.
- Experience in power and gas markets, trading, or portfolio management is helpful but not essential.
- Background in quantitative finance, algorithmic trading, energy, commodities, or capital markets is beneficial.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Interest in power and gas markets and in AI-enabled applications.
- Comfort working with large, unstructured, or messy datasets.
- Ability to turn analytical findings into commercial impact.
- Self-motivated, detail-focused, and eager to learn.
What You Will Gain
This role offers direct exposure to real trading and portfolio decision-making processes, as well as mentorship from traders, portfolio managers, and quantitative analysts. You will build practical experience using data and analytics to support commercial and operational decisions, while developing market, commercial, and technical understanding that supports long-term growth in the energy sector.
