Role overview
Stewart & Cavalier Ltd is an established engineering business with more than 70 years behind it, working across manufacturing, mechanical maintenance, project work, and general engineering. Based in Te Awamutu in the Waikato region, the company is looking for a Workshop 2IC to help run day-to-day workshop activity and support both workshop-based and site-based work around Waikato.
This position sits alongside the Workshop Manager and plays a key part in keeping work moving smoothly, safely, and to a high standard. The role is hands-on and people-focused, with responsibility for coordinating trades staff, managing workflow, maintaining quality, supporting inventory control, and contributing to staff growth and development.
What you will do
- Lead and support tradespeople and apprentices by assigning tasks, coaching performance, and encouraging skills development.
- Plan the day’s workload, organise jobs, and make sure people, equipment, and materials are used effectively to meet deadlines.
- Check repair and production work to ensure it meets quality expectations and relevant standards.
- Help maintain a strong health and safety culture by enforcing safe work practices and supporting safety training.
- Track workshop stock, order required parts and consumables, and work with suppliers when needed.
- Liaise with customers, internal teams, and external contractors to keep work progressing and resolve issues.
- Keep records up to date, monitor equipment, and assist with budgeting and reporting tasks.
What the company is looking for
The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership ability, clear communication, and sound problem-solving skills. You should have technical understanding relevant to workshop environments such as automotive, mechanical, manufacturing, or engineering work. Being organised, able to manage time well, and comfortable staying hands-on while supervising others are all important for success in this role. A strong commitment to safety and continuous improvement is also expected.
Compensation and benefits
A competitive salary is offered. You will also join a respected company that values teamwork and provides a supportive environment, along with additional employee benefits.
