Learning Specialist, Upper School

Role Overview

Marymount School of New York is hiring an experienced and energetic Learning Specialist for the Upper School. This role partners closely with teachers, administrators, families, and student support staff to deliver targeted academic guidance for students in grades 9 through 12. The position focuses on helping learners with varied academic profiles strengthen advanced study habits, self-advocacy, and executive functioning, while using insights from neuropsychological evaluations to shape support plans.

The specialist works across the Upper School community to coordinate accommodations, advise on classroom strategies, and contribute to a supportive yet academically demanding environment. In addition to direct student support, the role includes attendance at meetings, student supervision, and other program-related responsibilities as needed. Full-time Upper School faculty, including learning specialists, may also act as academic advisors to a small student cohort and typically lead at least one club or activity.

Key Duties

• Partner with the Upper School learning team to design and carry out individualized academic intervention plans.
• Provide one-on-one and small-group support to students in executive functioning, self-advocacy, testing accommodations, and subject-area needs.
• Review and apply recommendations from neuropsychological evaluations, including supporting IESP/CSE annual meetings and related services.
• Participate in faculty meetings and student support meetings when required.
• Organize standardized testing support for students with disabilities, including accommodation administration and application management for ACT/SAT.
• Work with teachers, families, and outside professionals to coordinate student support plans.
• Carry out supervisory and other divisional responsibilities assigned by the divisional head.

Required Qualifications

• A master’s degree in special education, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field.
• Previous experience supporting upper school students in a school environment.
• Skill in adapting instruction and using varied teaching approaches to meet different learning needs.
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities, along with excellent organizational skills.
• A demonstrated commitment to equity and belonging in educational practice.
