Role overview

This role is based at HM Prison Buckley Hall in Rochdale (OL12 9DP). It sits within a non-operational group profile and does not include line management duties. The post supports the day-to-day running of the establishment by carrying out a range of practical and manual tasks across different operational areas as needed.

Main duties

  • Record materials used and help with stock checks for tools, equipment, and consumables.
  • Keep work areas orderly, safe, and clean, while aiming to reduce waste during activities.
  • Notify the manager when stock levels need replenishing.
  • Complete allocated planned maintenance, minor repairs, and service requests through the computer aided facilities management system.
  • Undertake project-based tasks when required.
  • Recommend stock requirements, request goods and services, and ensure all used materials are properly logged and suitable for use.
  • Escort technical contractors when necessary, working in line with the Local Security Strategy.
  • Use the radio network regularly in accordance with local security procedures.
  • Act as a banksman when directing certain plant or machinery operations.
  • Take responsibility for tools and plant equipment, including routine checks and required records in line with the Local Security Strategy and National Security Framework.
  • Follow health and safety rules, procedures, and legislation so that mandatory compliance is maintained.
  • Drive estates vehicles and operate plant equipment.
  • Work within command mode arrangements and local contingency plans.
  • Handle urgent, incidental, or emergency tasks safely within agreed service delivery times.
  • Assemble products on site when needed.
  • Carry out pest prevention activity across the estate when required.
  • Contribute to prisoner reports, including parole and sentence planning.

Work areas covered

The post is rotational, and the job holder may move between several related support roles during their time in post. These may include catering, maintenance, shop, stores/warehouse/RIDS, and waste/environmental support functions.

Training and capability

This position requires basic knowledge and the willingness to complete job-specific training and courses for the relevant work areas. The successful candidate must follow the applicable health and safety requirements and be prepared to complete a manual handling course, basic security awareness training, and break-away techniques training if needed. Confident spoken English is required for carrying out the role; where relevant in Wales, Welsh may be acceptable.

Working hours and pay conditions

The standard working week is 37 hours.

For staff on closed pay structures only, Additional Conditioned Hours Pensionable (ACHP) apply. Employees transferring from a closed 39-hour pay structure may receive two protected pensionable additional committed hours. In that case, the working week will be 39 hours in total, made up of the standard 37 hours plus 2 additional ACHP hours paid at plain time pensionable rate.

Behaviours assessed

Applicants will be evaluated for the following behaviours during selection: working together, managing a quality service, communicating and influencing, developing self and others, and making effective decisions. The recruitment process uses Success Profiles and also considers strengths.

Security and checks

The selected candidate must complete a criminal record check. Anyone working with government assets must also pass baseline personnel security standard checks.

Nationality eligibility

This role is open to UK nationals, Irish nationals, Commonwealth nationals with UK work rights, eligible EU/Swiss/Norwegian/Icelandic/Liechtenstein nationals and certain family members with settled or pre-settled status under EUSS or a valid application, people with limited or indefinite leave to remain who met the EUSS eligibility date of 31 December 2020, and Turkish nationals and certain family members who have gained the right to work in the Civil Service.

The position includes access to learning and development, flexible working options where possible, an inclusive working culture, a Civil Service pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%, annual leave, public holidays, and season ticket advance.

Application and recruitment notes

Artificial intelligence may be used to support an application, but all examples and statements must be truthful, accurate, and based on the applicant’s own experience. If plagiarism or misuse of AI is identified, an application may be withdrawn and internal candidates may face disciplinary action. The recruitment process follows Civil Service Commission Recruitment Principles. Once the vacancy closes, the advertisement will no longer be available, so applicants may wish to keep a copy for their records. Feedback is provided only to candidates who attend interview or assessment.
