Role overview
Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering group is working to reshape analytics through a broad set of data products, including database services, data integration, big data analytics, messaging, real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The portfolio includes Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. The team’s goal is to create the data platform that supports AI and powers a new generation of data-driven applications.
Within Azure Data, the databases organization is responsible for building and operating Microsoft’s operational database systems. The focus is on storing and managing structured data for a wide range of applications and industries, with an emphasis on developer-friendly, mission-critical, AI-enabled operational databases across relational, non-relational, and open-source offerings.
The Azure PostgreSQL team is a rapidly expanding part of Azure Data. It is looking for a Software Development Engineer II to help build and run a globally distributed, fully managed PostgreSQL service that supports critical customer workloads at large scale. The work centers on dependable, high-performance, self-healing cloud systems and offers the chance to solve complex engineering problems while deepening technical expertise.
What you will do
- Build and deliver software that strengthens the reliability, scalability, performance, security, and efficiency of a cloud platform.
- Help maintain, troubleshoot, and improve production services, including participating in recurring on-call coverage.
- Work closely with teammates across different regions to support the requirements of enterprise-grade services.
- Take part in code reviews and bug or issue triage, and help guide decisions that align with product and engineering priorities.
- Contribute to ongoing decisions around design, architecture, standards, and operating practices for services and systems.
- Represent and support the organization’s culture and values.
Required qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proven coding experience in one or more languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
Preferred qualifications
- Hands-on experience building, testing, and sustaining production-grade software in a collaborative engineering setting.
- Strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, and core systems concepts.
- Experience contributing to open-source software and working with PostgreSQL.
- Strong analytical ability with a disciplined, structured approach to software design.
Security and screening requirements
This role requires meeting Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening standards. These may include the Microsoft Cloud Background Check, which must be completed at hire or transfer and again every two years thereafter.
Compensation and location note
The typical base pay range for Software Engineering IC3 across the U.S. is USD $102,100 to $202,200 per year. For work locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area, the applicable base pay range is USD $133,800 to $219,200 per year.
Some roles may also qualify for benefits and additional compensation.
