Role Overview
Timmons Group’s cultural resources team in Richmond, Virginia is hiring a full-time Architectural Historian through Dutton + Associates, a Timmons Group company. This role focuses on researching and evaluating historic buildings, structures, landscapes, and other related property types. The position works closely with colleagues across the architectural history and cultural resources teams to help deliver project objectives and compliance documentation. Regional overnight travel should be expected.
Applicants must include at least two writing samples along with a resume.
Key Duties
- Carry out historical field surveys and prepare thorough architectural and historical documentation.
- Compile site file forms, maps, and photo documentation for historic resources.
- Judge the importance of historic properties using accepted standards, including National Register criteria.
- Review how projects may affect historic resources under Section 106 requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act.
- Complete archival research when needed to support project work.
- Handle additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- A master’s degree (M.A. or M.S.) in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a closely related discipline from an accredited program is required.
- Preferably at least 5 years of experience in Cultural Resource Management.
- Must meet or surpass the Secretary of the Interior standards for Architectural History.
- Advanced working knowledge of ArcGIS is required.
- Strong command of architectural styles, construction methods, and the historical background of buildings and landscapes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with teammates, clients, and the public.
- Ability to juggle multiple assignments while meeting deadlines and budget expectations.
- Experience researching historic land records.
- Capable of working independently and also contributing effectively in a team setting.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Comfortable reading and navigating maps.
Compensation
The estimated pay range for this role is $60,000 to $80,000 per year. Final offers may vary based on relevant factors such as experience, education, skills, credentials, internal equity, and the complexity of the role.
