About the role
This position sits within Forensic Science Queensland and contributes to a statewide forensic biology service. The role is focused on delivering timely, high-quality, and innovative scientific support that strengthens the integrity of the Queensland justice system. It involves applying sound independent scientific judgement when examining specimens and samples, with a particular emphasis on forensic DNA analysis.
Key responsibilities
- Follow workplace health, safety, and service quality requirements to help maintain safe operations and consistent standards.
- Provide professional analytical support for forensic DNA work in line with the level of experience and expertise held.
- Carry out forensic DNA testing and related tasks using established accredited methods, standards, and equipment within a multidisciplinary team.
- Take an active role in team activities, including supporting the introduction of new tools, methods, or processes.
- Build scientific capability through learning within the team and ongoing professional development.
- Work collaboratively and communicate clearly with colleagues, clients, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Offer results and technical guidance to junior staff and stakeholders on complex scientific matters.
- Support quality and service improvement initiatives in line with NATA/ISO accreditation and certification requirements.
- Help create a positive, safe, and innovative workplace through participation in meetings, training, development, and performance processes.
- Ensure work complies with relevant laws, administrative requirements, and professional standards.
- Contribute to the efficient operation of the Forensic Biology Unit so service goals are met and clients receive reliable scientific support.
- Use forensic biology expertise to address complex scientific problems.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Team Leader, Deputy Manager, or Manager, Biology.
Technical skills and capabilities
- Experience working effectively in a scientific team and helping maintain a constructive work environment.
- Ability to manage forensic biology casework, including detecting, identifying, and analysing relevant materials.
- Capability to interpret analytical findings, including statistical interpretation where relevant.
- Strong interpersonal, negotiation, verbal, and written communication skills for engaging with varied audiences.
- Ability to monitor client and stakeholder satisfaction and resolve concerns constructively.
- Capacity to learn, apply, and review policies and procedures used in a forensic biology laboratory.
- Understanding of legislation, regulations, and standards applicable to laboratory operations.
- Ability to apply modern and innovative scientific processes, procedures, and concepts.
- Willingness to follow NATA/ISO accreditation and certification requirements, including quality control procedures.
- Selected candidates must consent to provide a DNA sample on commencement, and it will be retained for reference and comparison purposes.
