Description de l'emploi
Department Overview
Baseball Analytics is the quantitative research and data science function inside Baseball Operations. The group builds statistical models, machine learning systems, and analytical tools that help guide choices across Baseball Operations, including player acquisition, player development, and player optimization. Its work centers on predictive modeling, applied research, experimentation, and translating technical work into insights that support baseball decision-making.
Position Overview
The Boston Red Sox are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join the club’s Baseball Analytics team and help design, test, and refine predictive models that improve decision-making across Baseball Operations. In this senior role, you will work closely with the Baseball Analytics group and other Baseball Operations partners to influence player personnel moves and strategic direction. You will also help define the department’s data strategy, contribute to its growth, and keep its methods at the leading edge of predictive data science.
This opportunity is suited to someone who brings strong analytical ability, a solid understanding of baseball, and the skill to explain technical ideas clearly to non-technical audiences. The exact scope of the role, seniority level, and pay package will be aligned with the selected candidate’s background and experience.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is $100,000 to $140,000, depending on relevant experience and internal equity. Full-time staff are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package that includes healthcare, retirement plans, paid time off, and additional benefits.
Responsibilities
- Build and support reliable predictive models and data pipelines that produce insights for player evaluation, acquisition, development, and performance improvement.
- Prepare clear written analysis and data visualizations that communicate complex findings to a wide range of audiences, including technical experts and Baseball Operations leadership.
- Work with the Baseball Systems team to incorporate new analytical work into team applications and help spot and resolve data quality problems.
- Review emerging work from public and academic analytics communities and use those ideas to inspire new methods and improve the department’s approach.
- Develop original and practical methods that strengthen existing processes and lead to better decision-making across the department.
Competencies
The role calls for advanced knowledge of modern statistical and machine learning methods, along with strong command of widely used data science languages and libraries. Candidates should also understand how to frame research questions so they lead to useful, actionable conclusions. The ability to present analysis in a clean, intuitive, and engaging way for varied stakeholders such as leadership, coaches, players, and scouts is also important.
Additional Qualifications
- A PhD in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, engineering, applied mathematics, physics, quantitative social sciences, computer science, computer vision, or operations research, or comparable professional experience.
- Strong expertise in SQL and programming languages such as R or Python.
- Genuine enthusiasm for baseball and a strong motivation to help build a championship-caliber team.
Universal Competencies
All Baseball Operations roles are expected to demonstrate strong problem solving, teamwork, clear communication, and time management. Team members should also reflect the organization’s values of honesty, humility, relentlessness, and commitment to DEIB.
