Software Engineer, Search

About the role

As a Software Engineer on Search, you will help build technology that supports information discovery at a global scale. The work goes beyond traditional web search and focuses on systems that must stay fast, reliable, and broadly accessible for users around the world. The role offers the chance to contribute to a specific high-impact project while also growing across teams and products as business needs evolve.

Google’s engineering teams work across areas such as information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design, and mobile systems. Engineers in this role are expected to be adaptable, take initiative, and handle new technical challenges across the full stack.

What you will do

• Develop product or system code for assigned features and components.
• Assess code written by other engineers and offer feedback on style, correctness, maintainability, testability, and efficiency.
• Update technical documentation and learning materials when products, programs, or user needs change.
• Investigate, isolate, and resolve product or system issues by analyzing root causes and their effect on hardware, networks, or service reliability and quality.
• Plan and manage priorities, timelines, and delivery commitments for technical work.
• Design, build, test, deploy, support, and improve software solutions over time.

Minimum qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent level of practical experience.
• At least 1 year of software development experience using one or more programming languages such as Python, C, C++, Java, or JavaScript.

Preferred qualifications

• A master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or a closely related technical discipline.
• Background in developing accessible technologies.
