The Specimen Processor is an important member of the Laboratory Operations team. The role focuses on accurate specimen receipt, registration, handling, and routing, while helping maintain sample integrity, safety, quality, and timely movement of specimens to the correct testing areas.

Responsibilities

  • Accept incoming specimens, open them correctly, and prepare them for laboratory testing.
  • Review samples for suitability and decide whether to accept or reject them based on established procedures.
  • Sort, prioritize, and route specimens to the relevant laboratory departments.
  • Record patient details, specimen information, and requested tests accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Digitize requisition forms and any supporting paperwork as needed.
  • Work in line with laboratory SOPs and health and safety requirements to protect specimen quality and maintain compliance.
  • Contribute to smooth daily lab operations by supporting workflow efficiency.
  • Assist with quality improvement efforts and help with incident or complaint reviews when required.

Qualifications

  • A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Life Sciences, Healthcare, or a similar discipline is required.
  • Experience in a laboratory, specimen reception, healthcare, or data-entry setting is preferred.
  • High accuracy and close attention to detail are essential for data entry and specimen processing.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety practices, sample collection requirements, and quality controls is needed.
  • Ability to use Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Microsoft Office tools effectively is expected.
  • Good communication, organization, and time-management skills are important, along with the ability to handle a busy work environment.
