Role overview
National Trust is hiring a Facilities Coordinator to support the day-to-day running of two historic visitor sites in North West Wales: Penrhyn Castle and Garden, and Plas Newydd House & Gardens. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys keeping complex buildings operating safely, efficiently, and in a way that supports a great visitor experience.
The properties attract more than 200,000 visitors annually, so the work combines practical facilities support with strong attention to compliance, planning, and communication. You will help ensure that maintenance, safety checks, and operational processes are kept on track across both sites.
Working pattern and contract
This is a permanent part-time role of 33.75 hours per week. Regular weekend and Bank Holiday working is required in line with operational needs. The usual pattern is Sunday to Thursday, with Thursday as a half day, although flexibility is needed and the schedule may initially be Monday to Friday while you get to know the sites.
Accommodation is provided to the postholder where required for the proper or better performance of the role, in line with Trust criteria and HMRC rules. The position also includes Key Representative responsibilities, meaning you may need to respond to issues, including urgent or emergency matters, during evening cover outside normal working hours on a typical 1 in 3 basis.
What the role involves
You will help coordinate facilities activity across the properties, making sure the operation stays organised and responsive. No two days are likely to be the same, and the role suits someone who can plan ahead while also adapting quickly when unexpected issues arise in a historic environment.
Because these are older and unusual buildings, problems can appear without warning, so practical thinking and creative troubleshooting are important parts of the job. A major element of the work is compliance-led, along with reporting back clearly to the wider team.
Key duties
- Coordinate supplier relationships and contract administration.
- Organise and support facilities team workstreams.
- Help plan, monitor, and track compliance activities.
- Support reactive repairs and coordinate planned maintenance programmes.
- Use several digital systems, including task trackers, compliance tools, and asset management platforms.
- Take part in duty management rotas.
- Act as Key Representative and respond to issues during out-of-hours cover when needed.
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate will be highly organised, able to juggle several priorities, and comfortable taking ownership of tasks. Strong communication skills and a confident leadership style are important, as is experience or working knowledge of facilities management or a similar environment.
You should also be comfortable using digital systems and data tracking tools, and have a proactive approach to solving maintenance and operational issues so downtime is kept to a minimum and the environment remains safe and functional.
Package and benefits
The National Trust offers a benefits package designed to support wellbeing, flexibility, and work-life balance. This includes a pension contribution of up to 10% of basic salary, free admission to National Trust places for you, a guest, and your children under 18, and several lifestyle and financial support schemes.
Additional benefits include a rental deposit loan, season ticket loan, an EV car lease scheme for eligible roles, Perks at Work discounts, flexible working where possible, employee assistance support, and free parking at most Trust properties. Annual leave can be up to 32 days depending on service length, plus the option to buy additional holiday, subject to meeting minimum criteria.
Inclusion
The organisation aims to create an inclusive workplace where people feel they belong. It values difference and wants its teams to reflect the communities and audiences it serves.
Additional information
This role is based in Bangor, Wales, United Kingdom, at Penrhyn Castle, LL57 4HN, and also supports Plas Newydd House & Gardens. The contract is permanent. The salary is £24,850.80 per year, pro rata from a full-time equivalent salary of £27,612.
The role profile notes that you do not need to match every skill and experience requirement listed to be considered, as the document is intended to give a full picture of what the role can involve.
