About Severn Trent
Severn Trent supplies water across the heart of the UK, serving 4.8 million homes and businesses every day of the year. The work is carried out by 6,500 team members, and the organisation values different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences because they help improve service for customers and communities.
Role overview
The Network Response team is looking for a Network Inspector to help operate and maintain the underground clean water network so customers receive a continuous supply of high-quality drinking water.
This position combines reactive and planned activity, so the work changes from day to day. You may be responding to issues such as loss of supply or helping restore water service, and on other days you may be carrying out preventative maintenance such as mains flushing, filter changes, and checks on valves and other network assets.
The operation runs around the clock to reduce disruption and maintain service standards. The shift pattern is four days on followed by four days off, with early, day, and night shifts scheduled in advance.
Key duties
- Take responsibility for personal safety and the safety of colleagues, the public, and any others affected by the work.
- Carry out dynamic risk assessments and apply appropriate controls so all tasks can be completed safely.
- Use sound judgement when balancing resources, customer impact, public safety, and traffic considerations.
- Work in line with legal, regulatory, company, hygiene, environmental, and street works requirements, including NRSWA.
- Set up traffic management where needed to support safe and effective clean water network operations.
- Deploy and operate clean water bowsers and continuous supply equipment for reactive and planned work to restore or protect supply.
- Maintain key equipment such as chlorination systems, incident response vehicles, power bowsers, static bowsers, and pumps so they remain ready for use.
- Check vehicles for sufficient fittings and consumables, sterilise relevant equipment, test pump efficiency, and carry out pump stripping and component-level maintenance.
What you will bring
You should be comfortable working to statutory and regulatory standards, including hygiene, environmental, and NRSWA requirements, and be confident arranging traffic management for safe operations.
Success in this role also depends on being able to deliver excellent customer service, being computer literate, and having familiarity with utility-sector environments such as electricity, gas, oil, or cabling.
A full and valid Category B driving licence is required because of the nature of the work.
Severn Trent also welcomes applicants with the right attitude, positivity, and a caring approach, even if they are still building experience.
Shift pattern and working style
The role involves working alone at times and travelling between towns, cities, and rural locations. It follows a planned 24/7 shift rota with early, day, night, and weekend working.
Pay and benefits
- Starting salary of £34,107
- Shift pay of £5,771.40
- Weekend allowance of £3,338.40
- 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays
- Annual bonus of up to £1,500 per year based on company performance
- Pension scheme where the company doubles your contribution up to 15% when you contribute 7.5%
- Sharesave option to buy Severn Trent Plc shares at a discounted rate
- Flexible benefits including Gymflex, dental cover, critical illness insurance, and a technology purchase scheme
- Ability to save up to £500 per month for three or five years, with the option to buy Severn Trent Plc shares at a discounted rate
Application process
Applicants should have an updated CV and around five minutes to complete the application. The organisation says it will share the outcome after the closing date and asks candidates to watch their phone and email for updates.
