Role overview
Nyrstar Port Pirie is seeking a Plant Operator to join its production team in regional South Australia. This position is based in Port Pirie, about 224 km from Adelaide, and offers a lifestyle shift away from city living with access to a more affordable cost of living, a family-oriented community, and nearby destinations such as the Yorke Peninsula, Clare Valley, and the Flinders Ranges.
The company is also offering financial support for relocation, making the move easier for suitable candidates.
About the company
Nyrstar is an international producer of essential metals and critical minerals that support a lower-carbon future. The business has a strong position in zinc and lead and operates across Europe and Australia, employing around 4,000 people. Nyrstar Australia is working with support from the Australian, South Australian and Tasmanian Governments to grow new critical minerals products and distribution pathways. The Australian operations are owned by Trafigura, a global commodity trading and logistics company.
What the role involves
As a Plant Operator, you will be placed in one of five plant areas and help run equipment such as forklifts and cranes, while also carrying out manual work to process and produce metals safely and efficiently. In simple terms, the job helps convert raw material into metal products.
The roster is an even-time 4/4 shift pattern, with 12-hour shifts. This includes two day shifts, two night shifts, and then four days off, giving you extended time to enjoy the region and participate in local community life.
What is on offer
- Support to relocate and become part of the Port Pirie community
- Commute to the worksite within 5 minutes
- $5,000 relocation payment included with the first month’s pay
- Another $5,000 payment after 12 months of service
- Company-provided accommodation for the first 28 days
- Five weeks of annual leave
- Subsidised dental cover and access to an employee assistance program
- Paid parental leave
- Training and further education to help develop your career
Candidate profile
The ideal applicant will bring some experience in heavy industry, construction, or a similar labouring environment. Having licences such as Forklift or Bridge and Gantry, as well as tickets like Confined Space or Working at Heights, would be a strong advantage.
You should also be physically fit, able to complete a pre-employment medical, work safely at all times, and contribute positively as a team member.
Additional information
Applicants must have unrestricted and valid work rights in Australia. The employer is an equal opportunity organisation and welcomes a diverse workforce. Veterans of the Australian Defence Force are encouraged to apply.
Nyrstar Port Pirie’s safety requirements include a clean-shaven appearance and a non-smoking workplace. Because the site is classified as a Major Hazard Facility and operates under SafeWork SA regulations, candidates may be asked questions about physical attributes to ensure compliance with the law.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview in Adelaide CBD on Wednesday 29 July 2026. Successful candidates will then be asked to attend a site and town tour at Port Pirie, followed by a pre-employment medical.
Only applicants who move to the next stage will receive contact. Thank you for your interest in the role.
