Quantity Surveyor

The opportunity

A growing civil contractor in Wellington is looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor, or an experienced Intermediate Quantity Surveyor, to join the team and contribute across several civil projects. This position sits in a fast-moving environment where you will help improve commercial outcomes, protect financial certainty, and support delivery teams from project start through to final completion.

You will partner closely with project managers, site crews, suppliers, and subcontractors, while also taking on a mentoring role within the commercial function.

What you will do

• Take ownership of contract administration, project budgets, and day-to-day cost control.
• Prepare and lodge progress claims for contracted work and variations, helping maintain a clear and predictable financial position.
• Monitor project expenditure and compile detailed budget-versus-actual reporting.
• Drive procurement activity, negotiate terms with suppliers and subcontractors, and handle related commercial administration.
• Develop and sustain effective working relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
• Spot commercial and contractual risks early and manage them appropriately.
• Deliver regular forecasting and commercial updates to project stakeholders.
• Work alongside project and site teams to keep project delivery running smoothly.
• Support the growth of intermediate and junior Quantity Surveyors through coaching and guidance.

What you will bring

• A qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related field, or equivalent practical industry experience.
• At least 5 years of experience, ideally on civil or infrastructure projects.
• The ability to handle several projects of different sizes and complexity at the same time.
• Strong financial, analytical, and numerical reporting capability.
• Confidence managing subcontractor claims, variations, and commercial negotiations.
• Experience with Candy software, especially for post-tender budget management, is a strong advantage.
• Solid skills in Microsoft Office and document control systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Additional information

This role is based in Wellington and is a full-time, on-site position. The hiring team is open to Senior QS candidates as well as experienced Intermediate QS professionals. If needed, relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate.
