Trainee Quantity Surveyor

Role overview

The Mick George Group is hiring a Trainee Quantity Surveyor to support its Contracting team in Huntingdon. This is a site-based position with working hours from Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 5:00pm. Pay will be determined by experience at management discretion.

The business has grown from a single tipper truck into a major construction supplier operating more than 600 HGV vehicles across 40+ sites and employing over 1,000 people. What the role involves

In this position, you will support the commercial team across construction projects from start to finish. You will gain exposure to project reporting, procurement, subcontractor accounts, and data analysis while being guided by experienced quantity surveyors. The role also includes helping identify and manage project risks, following company procedures, maintaining relationships with clients and suppliers, and contributing to a safe working environment.

Key duties

• Observe and support the daily commercial management of projects.
• Help administer contracts throughout the project lifecycle and check compliance.
• Assist with subcontractor accounts, including variations, re-measurement adjustments, and making sure payments are processed on time.
• Support procurement activities in line with project needs.
• Help prepare client valuations and pursue payment requests where appropriate.
• Assist in preparing payment certificates according to contractual terms.
• Support cost and value reporting within the financial timetable.
• Highlight risks, opportunities, and concerns to management as early as possible so they can be discussed collaboratively.
• Compile data and records needed by the quantity surveying team.
• Provide processing support to the commercial team using relevant software.
• Maintain positive client relationships.
• Stay mindful of health and safety duties on site and escalate any concerns to site or senior management.
• Act professionally at all times as a representative of the company.

Requirements and qualifications

Applicants should hold a Degree or NVQ in Quantity Surveying and have a valid CSCS Card. Strong communication, problem-solving, and computer literacy are required, along with the ability to work in a structured but adaptable way. A proactive attitude and a willingness to work as part of a team are also important.
