Job overview
The GL Accountant Assistant will support general ledger operations and help ensure that accounting entries are processed accurately, with proper control account and individual account balances maintained. The role also contributes to the completion of month-end closing activities in line with company policies and procedures.
Reporting line
This position reports to the Head of General Accounting.
Core accounting duties
- Create new general ledger accounts in the SAP General Ledger Master, ensuring the required supporting documents are in place.
- Record bank transactions accurately and on time, then match period-end balances against bank statements while following up on unresolved items within the required timelines.
- Prepare bank reconciliation statements for management review and approval.
- Enter inter-company transactions and make sure period-end balances are aligned.
- Prepare monthly accrual entries for outstanding liabilities and reconcile prepaid accounts through monthly amortization.
- Keep an organized archive of accounting records, including vouchers, statements, reimbursement claims, and related files, in both physical and electronic formats for control and easy retrieval during management or audit reviews.
- Compile and share periodic reconciliations, reports, accrual schedules, statistics, and other required information.
- Maintain records for special accounts, manage priorities, and complete tasks within agreed timelines.
- Reconcile financial transactions linked to the general ledger and ensure they are posted correctly.
- Prepare statements and schedules for auditors, checking the completeness and accuracy of the information before submission.
- Support the General Accountant in responding to audit queries and in preparing and reviewing audit reports with internal and external stakeholders.

- Follow all applicable SHEQ policies, procedures, instructions, and controls to support a safe, secure, environmentally responsible, and high-quality service environment.
- Work in line with departmental policies, systems, processes, and procedures so activities remain controlled and consistent.
Additional duties
Any other assignment given by the GL Accountant may also form part of this role.
Qualification and experience
A diploma in Accounting or a closely related discipline is required. The ideal candidate should have 1 to 3 years of relevant experience in a similar role, preferably within a comparable industry.
Technical knowledge
The role calls for working knowledge of accounting and financial frameworks such as IFRS and GAAP, along with familiarity with SAP-related modules.
