Role Overview
This is a 6-month contract opportunity for an entry-level Junior Data Scientist to support a healthcare diagnostics team working within Machine Intelligence and R&D. The work centers on building machine learning solutions for hematology analyzers, with an emphasis on classification and clustering problems using tabular data. The models are intended for deployment on edge hardware. This assignment is well suited to someone who is inquisitive, flexible, and eager to strengthen applied machine learning skills with support from senior specialists.
Responsibilities
- Create classification and clustering models using tabular datasets to enhance hematology analyzer functionality.
- Assist with building, testing, and refining models under the direction of a senior data scientist.
- Work closely with senior teammates to clarify needs, investigate data, and check model quality.
- Record work in a clear and structured way so others can review, reproduce, and extend it.
- Prepare solutions for deployment on edge hardware.
Requirements
- 0 to 2 years of hands-on experience applying machine learning to practical problems; internships, academic research, and coursework projects are acceptable.
- Strong programming ability in Python, along with familiarity with pandas, scikit-learn, and NumPy.
- Good grounding in statistics, machine learning, and algorithms.
- Understanding of classification and clustering techniques for tabular data, including how to choose methods and assess outcomes.
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree is considered an advantage.
- Curiosity, a learning-oriented mindset, and the ability to explain analytical findings clearly to others.
- W2 employment only; candidates requiring C2C or 1099 arrangements are not eligible.
Additional Information
This position is a contract role with a planned length of 6 months. The pay range is $40 to $48 per hour. The expected start is ASAP. The location is hybrid in Westbrook, Maine.
