This role sits within ZURU House, a fully integrated modular prefabricated housing system, and is centered on the mechanical engineering foundation of that system.

Role Overview

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will take end-to-end ownership of mechanical product design within the ZURU House system. You will work across structural, MEP, and facade product areas, collaborating with teams in New Zealand, Los Angeles, China, and Italy from early concept through compliance, manufacturing, and installation.

What You’ll Do

• Develop mechanical components for the ZURU House platform using SolidWorks across structural, MEP, and facade categories.
• Lead the full design process from early concept ideas through to outputs that are ready for manufacturing.
• Create in-house prototypes, run tests, record outcomes, and refine designs based on what the testing reveals.
• Carry out several test cycles and demonstrate measurable improvement in each iteration.
• Analyze how design modifications affect neighboring parts of the wider building system.
• Work closely with owners of connected products to manage dependencies early and prevent downstream issues.
• Partner with compliance specialists to ensure designs align with the correct building codes and technical standards for each target market.
• Build compliance requirements into the design from the start rather than adding them at the end.
• Coordinate with teams across China manufacturing, LA industrial design, New Zealand engineering, and the Italian proprietary software function.
• Keep design intent and delivery timelines aligned across multiple time zones and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Address product manufacturing issues and assess how each design fits into the broader building system.
• Advance products from testing into manufacturing with limited supervision.
• Maintain clear system documentation, including design specifications, test records, and change histories.
• Write documentation that is useful to engineers and easy to act on.

Experience and Skills

You should have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, along with at least 5 years of experience in mechanical product development. Strong SolidWorks capability is essential, including the ability to create manufacture-ready 3D designs independently. A demonstrated history of taking products from concept to tested, production-ready outcomes is also required. Experience with compliance, building standards, or technical standards is useful, though not strictly mandatory.
