Role overview

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is looking for a Website Officer based in Nairobi, Kenya, within its Communication Division. The role supports UNEP’s digital presence across corporate websites, related platforms, and the Knowledge Repository, helping deliver clear, accessible, and brand-aligned web communication worldwide.

Reporting to the Head of Web Platforms and working under the guidance of the Chief of the Digital Strategy Section, the incumbent will help shape web strategy, improve platform performance, support stakeholders, and contribute to digital campaigns and analytics.

Website strategy, development, and maintenance

  • Help design and roll out web communication strategies for corporate sites, affiliated websites, and the Knowledge Repository so they stay aligned with UNEP’s goals and visual identity.
  • Oversee the upkeep, improvement, and technical development of Drupal- and DSpace-based platforms, with attention to usability, integration, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Set and maintain technical, accessibility, and multilingual standards across the organization’s web properties.
  • Work with developers, designers, and outside service providers to implement technical enhancements and resolve platform needs.
  • Support internal teams and end users with website navigation, CMS use, and other functional questions.
  • Investigate and fix bugs, technical faults, and system issues to keep websites running smoothly.
  • Liaise with IT teams and vendors on subscriptions, advanced technical matters, and deployment of new applications.

Business analysis and quality assurance

  • Carry out business analysis, map processes, and gather requirements from stakeholders to define what the platforms need to deliver.
  • Convert those needs into functional specifications, project documents, implementation plans, and work schedules.
  • Contribute to the design and development of digital products through design thinking, prototyping, and user-focused methods.
  • Act as a key contact for internal stakeholders so that content and functionality meet organizational and multilingual requirements.
  • Partner with graphic designers, UX/UI specialists, and content teams to ensure brand consistency and a strong user experience.
  • Deliver training on CMS use, website procedures, templates, and effective content management practices.

Content strategy and digital campaign management

  • Build and execute content strategies for web platforms and the Knowledge Repository.
  • Create efficient processes for writing, editing, publishing, and translating content.
  • Identify, curate, and publish content that is accurate, engaging, SEO-friendly, and consistent with brand standards.
  • Review web pages for quality and consistency in layout, design, formatting, and imagery.
  • Track user feedback and keep improving existing content while also developing new site sections and features.
  • Plan and run organic and paid digital marketing initiatives that support UNEP campaigns and messaging on the triple planetary crisis.
  • Manage campaigns across search engines, Google Ads, Bing Ads, YouTube, and other digital channels.

Performance monitoring, analytics, and optimization

  • Create measurement frameworks and KPIs for websites, campaigns, and the Knowledge Repository.
  • Monitor traffic, engagement, and conversion data using analytics tools.
  • Interpret data to spot trends, improvement opportunities, and ways to strengthen user experience and organizational results.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, annual, and campaign-level reports.
  • Lead optimization work such as A/B testing, SEO improvements, and usability enhancements.
  • Track market developments and emerging digital tools and trends.
  • Build dashboards, charts, visualizations, and reports to support evidence-based planning and decision-making.

Experience requirements

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience managing web and knowledge platforms in a large science-based or similar organization is required.
  • Experience handling medium- to large-scale technical projects in complex environments with multiple stakeholders is required.
  • Hands-on experience administering content management systems, especially Drupal, is required.
  • Experience managing knowledge repositories and platforms using tools such as DSpace is required.
  • At least two years of experience leading diverse teams, including planning, performance management, and delivery oversight, is required.
  • Experience in digital media strategy, digital transformation, public information, and campaign management is required.
  • Experience with change management initiatives in the United Nations system or a similar international organization is desirable.
  • Experience using project management tools such as Microsoft Project is desirable.
  • At least two years of experience in data analytics or a related field is desirable.

Education requirements

  • An advanced university degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Communications, Public Information, or a related subject is required.
  • A first-level university degree plus two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead of an advanced degree.
  • Completion of degree or non-degree study in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is desirable.
