Applied AI Engineer, Global Public Sector

Role overview

This position sits within Scale AI’s fast-growing Global Public Sector organization, which focuses on applying artificial intelligence to some of the most important challenges faced by governments and public institutions worldwide. The team’s work includes building tailored AI applications that can serve large citizen populations, producing high-quality training data for national language models, and providing advisory and enablement support to expand AI adoption.

As an Applied AI Engineer, you will design and deliver end-to-end AI solutions for public sector clients using the latest advances in artificial intelligence. The role also involves helping create custom datasets, building evaluation methods, and fine-tuning advanced models so they perform well in real-world, high-impact settings with broad reach.

Scale’s goal is to create reusable AI building blocks that help public sector organizations modernize operations and serve citizens more effectively through advanced technology.

What you will do

• Work closely with public sector clients to understand their problems in depth and translate them into AI-based solution designs.
• Develop and launch production-ready, end-to-end AI applications using the newest capabilities from leading AI labs as well as open-source models.
• Partner with cross-functional specialists, including data annotation teams, to assemble strong training datasets.
• Create and sustain reliable evaluation frameworks that measure model quality, robustness, and usefulness.
• Join customer conversations and engagements, which may include travel for about two weeks each quarter.
• Help grow AI capability in the public sector by sharing practical knowledge and expertise with teams and stakeholders.

Candidate profile

The ideal applicant brings a strong engineering foundation, a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or another quantitative discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience. You should have substantial post-graduate engineering experience, solid programming ability, prior production experience with AI/ML systems, and comfort working with cloud-based ML platforms. Strong analytical thinking, a data-led approach to improving models and datasets, and clear communication skills are also important.
