About the role
This full-time Assistant Front End Manager position in Courtenay, British Columbia is part of Sobeys’ Store Careers division within the Retail - Front End category. What you will do
The Assistant Front End Manager supports the Front End Manager in running the department efficiently and with strong cost control. This position involves leading, coaching, motivating, and training team members to deliver excellent customer service while following food safety rules, standard operating procedures, company policies, health and safety practices, and other required programs.
The role also contributes to scheduling, labour cost management, budgeting, inventory control, merchandising, hiring, and staff development. A key part of the job is building customer loyalty, meeting customer needs, and creating a positive environment for both employees and shoppers.
Key responsibilities
- Build and sustain a coaching-focused workplace that encourages employee development and a strong passion for food.
- Act as a strong leader and set the standard for the team through personal example.
- Support employee management tasks such as hiring, onboarding, training, development, performance reviews, succession planning, and compensation processes.
- Share operational updates and changes with department staff clearly and in a timely way.
- Help create a shopping experience that strengthens customer satisfaction, loyalty, sales, and profitability.
- Deliver high-quality customer service and respond effectively to customer needs.
- Strengthen product knowledge, including awareness of product updates, promotions, and seasonal trends.
- Oversee ordering, receiving, organizing, rotating, merchandising, and presentation of stock according to company standards.
- Help ensure corporate policies, initiatives, and standard procedures are followed, including accurate and timely documentation.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of OH&S, food safety, and other regulatory requirements.
- Assist in meeting financial goals by supporting sales and margin improvement, forecasting, variance review, corrective actions, and labour cost management.
- Support budget planning and control for the department.
- Keep up to date on company programs and attend required training.
- Stay informed about local competitors and broader industry trends.
- Promote employee engagement and contribute ideas for continuous improvement.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in line with company expectations.
- Perform additional duties as required.
What you need
- High school diploma.
- At least 12 months of retail store experience in a relevant department.
- Experience reading and interpreting financial reports and budgets.
- Ability to work on your own in a fast-paced setting.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Good work habits and the ability to handle multiple tasks at once.
