Role overview
The Category Manager will own a product category end to end, with responsibility for pricing, promotion, vendor relationships, assortment planning, and category growth. The position calls for strong commercial judgment, a clear understanding of consumer behavior, and the ability to balance supply and demand while improving sales and profitability.
Key responsibilities
- Own the category’s top-line and bottom-line performance.
- Understand the product roadmap and manage both sourcing/supply and demand-side needs.
- Build the brand over time and create added value for customers.
- Track customer NPS and overall experience before and after purchase.
- Study data and insights to identify consumer and industry trends.
- Define long-term strategies for category growth.
- Work on exit plans for products that do not perform well.
- Prepare cost analysis, profitability assessments, and recommendations for cost optimization.
- Develop trust-based vendor relationships to secure better pricing and service quality.
- Place the right orders to maintain availability as per demand.
- Participate in forecasting and budgeting activities.
- Decide how the category should be positioned to improve visibility.
- Coordinate with marketing teams on pricing and promotional plans.
- Partner with buyers and merchandisers to grow category offerings.
- Forecast product demand to support healthy inventory planning.
- Take ownership of category budgets and revenue targets.
- Monitor performance versus plans and business cases, and escalate gaps or deviations.
Qualifications
The role requires a Bachelor’s Degree, Post Graduate Diploma, or Professional Degree in Finance, Accountancy, Banking, or a related discipline. A background in Banking or Financial Services is preferred. Candidates should have at least 4 years of experience in category management or a similar role, along with strong analytical, financial modeling, communication, and presentation skills. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, methodical, comfortable handling multiple priorities under tight timelines, and well versed in category management, marketing, sales, data analysis, and forecasting.
