Custodian

Job overview

The custodian will be accountable for keeping assigned spaces clean, orderly, and sanitary while following safe work practices and site procedures.

Key duties

• Carry out janitorial tasks across the assigned area.
• Complete all items on the daily work schedule.
• Handle hazardous waste duties such as collecting, sorting, classifying, storing, shipping, receiving, labeling, cleaning, recycling, and packaging special and hazardous waste materials.
• Use motorized cleaning machines and related equipment.
• Maintain day-to-day cleanliness and upkeep of the work area.
• Escalate incidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
• Follow safety rules, site policies, and operating procedures.
• Intervene when unsafe behavior is observed in others or in oneself.
• Work cooperatively with teammates and complete assigned tasks as part of a group.
• Perform repetitive duties as required.
• Keep the work area neat throughout the shift.
• Follow company protocols, rules, and procedures at all times.
• Accept direction and respond appropriately to supervision.
• Communicate professionally with leads, supervisors, coworkers, managers, and customers.
• Cover duties during staffing shortages when needed.
• Help the shift lead finish punch-list items.
• Use the correct personal protective equipment.
• Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
• Understand the importance of customer service and customer satisfaction.
• Work with reporting systems and maintain environmental awareness.

Qualifications

No specific formal education is required. Prior training or experience of 3 to 6 months is preferred, and an equivalent mix of education and experience may also be considered.

A valid driver’s license may be required. Completion of safety and task training certifications is expected. Forklift certification may also be necessary.

Skills and abilities

The role benefits from bilingual ability, along with the capacity to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and similar documents. Strong verbal and written communication skills are important, as is knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment care, and the safe use of cleaning chemicals and compounds.

Work environment and physical demands

The employee will frequently sit and will need to talk or listen as part of the role. The position requires the ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be available for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Shift and compensation

The schedule runs Monday through Thursday, from 4:00 PM to 2:30 AM. Pay is between $15.00 and $16.00 per hour.
