Role overview
Willmott Dixon is hiring an Estimator to support its Construction Wales & West business. The role covers projects across several sectors and combines time in the Cardiff office with remote working. The business has strong current workload and a healthy pipeline of opportunities extending for the next 2 to 3 years and beyond.
In this position, you will determine build costs for customers, making sure estimates are delivered on time, with strong cost accuracy, and to a high standard of quality. You will work closely with the wider preconstruction team and supply chain partners to produce accurate pricing that reflects customer needs, project scope, and applicable legislation, while keeping customer value at the centre of delivery.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out project take-offs efficiently and with precision to prepare cost plans and bills of quantities at the required level of detail under SMM7 and within tender deadlines.
- Make sure all pricing aligns with the agreed scope, customer expectations, and current legal requirements.
- Work alongside the preconstruction team to help win and convert tender opportunities.
- Develop dependable cost plans through each design stage, up to target price.
- Advise the design team and inform the customer on affordability matters.
- Apply technical knowledge to spot risks, opportunities, and value-adding solutions.
- Support design-related cost control items and follow them through the RIBA stages.
- Prepare a complete and well-supported cost handover pack for the commercial build team, including comparisons, bills of quantities, tender documentation, and quotations.
- Partner with the design lead to capture design fees in the tender summary, including consultants, statutory bodies, surveys, schedules, and similar items.
- Assist with change control by identifying design changes between RIBA stages and advising on likely impact and approximate cost.
- Assess alternative design options to support final design decisions and customer or project budgets.
Requirements
- Proven background in completing framework and two-stage estimating work successfully.
- Experience measuring quantities to SMM7 standards across a range of work packages.
- Exposure to a variety of construction methods.
- Strong track record of managing cost, time, and quality against targets.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical specifications accurately.
- Very strong numeracy and mathematical skills.
- Minimum relevant Level 4 qualification such as HNC or NVQ4 is preferred.
- A relevant degree is desirable.
- Experience using Conquest Estimating System or a comparable tool is desirable.
- Working towards MCIOB or RICS would be an advantage.
