Role Purpose

The Lighting Technician is responsible for installing, operating, and maintaining lighting systems for entertainment venues onboard the ship. The role also supports a guest-focused environment that helps drive satisfaction, revenue, and overall company performance.

Key Duties

  • Set, circuit, and focus lighting for assigned performances.
  • Program the lighting console during technical rehearsals when required.
  • Carry out pre-show equipment and circuit checks to confirm that every setup meets company procedures.
  • Run manual and computerized lighting systems during performances.
  • Preserve the intended visual design and performance quality throughout the show.
  • Operate follow spots when needed.
  • Keep an accurate performance report log for each show.

  • Attend all show setups, calls, and meetings punctually.
  • Deliver high guest comfort and service in accordance with Viking’s STAR Service standards and Public Health policies.
  • Take part in the daily team meeting to stay aligned with operational needs and service expectations.
  • Use required personal protective equipment and safe lifting practices at all times.
  • Maintain grooming and uniform standards exactly as required.
  • Protect company property, especially during rough weather, to reduce damage or loss.
  • Remain adaptable, work varied hours under pressure, and consistently present a positive, professional attitude.
  • Stay informed about ports of call, shore excursions, and onboard entertainment activities.
  • Support departmental quality and financial goals.
  • Follow all safety, security, environmental, public health, and fire-prevention procedures, including training and evacuation drills.
  • Carry out additional tasks assigned by the Cruise Director, Assistant Cruise Director, Stage Manager, or Audio Designer.

Candidate Profile

  • Experience using lighting equipment for live events is required, including work with DMX control systems and advanced wiring; shipboard experience is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree with a focus on technical theater is preferred.
  • You should be comfortable using basic machinery, hand tools, and control consoles such as MARTIN M1 and GrandMa, along with LED and automated fixtures, fog machines, laser emitters, spotlights, and strobes.
  • The job requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to stand, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, and work from scaffolding for extended periods.
  • You must be able to move across catwalks and access all areas of the theater spaces.
  • Excellent spoken and written English is essential.
  • You should be flexible, calm under pressure, committed to teamwork, able to work independently, and strongly motivated.
