Role Overview
This is a permanent caretaker position at Notre Dame School in Brantford. The role is a 1.0 FTE assignment with a schedule of 40 hours per week for 12 months of the year. The afternoon shift runs from 3:30 pm to 11:30 pm. The start date is to be determined.
Qualifications
- Experience with cleaning methods and procedures, typically gained through at least one year of training plus hands-on work in commercial or institutional cleaning.
- An Ontario Secondary School Diploma, ideally with technical coursework, is preferred.
- Ability to read and write effectively, including preparing supply requisitions, documenting incidents at the worksite, and interpreting WHMIS and Material Safety Data Sheets. Basic arithmetic, including proportions, is also required.
- Practical understanding of basic electrical systems, plumbing, heating operations, yard care, cleaning practices, fire extinguishers and alarm systems, along with the ability to use security systems and programmable time controllers.
- Knowledge of safe work practices and regulations such as WHMIS, personal protective equipment, lifting methods, material handling, and safe use of ladders and scaffolding.
- Ability to operate tools and equipment safely, including hand tools, power tools, floor machines, and lawn maintenance equipment, as well as work from ladders, scaffolding, scissor lifts, and man lifts.
- Comfort working in a computer-based environment, including data entry, internet use, e-mail, and various software programs.
- Strong people skills and the ability to work effectively with supervisors, maintenance staff, teachers, students, and contractors.
- Capacity to work independently with limited supervision or as part of a team.
- Subject to accommodation duties, ability to complete physically demanding tasks such as climbing, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying moderate to heavy loads, including janitorial equipment, furniture, supplies, water pails, and garbage bags.
Responsibilities
- Keep the school or assigned area clean, healthy, and safe.
- Maintain school grounds through tasks such as grass cutting and snow removal.
- Support the principal during site emergencies involving heating, repairs, electrical issues, or water pipes.
- Watch for and report any unsafe or potentially harmful conditions or incidents on or near school property.
- Support outside groups using the school by opening and securing doors and sharing any concerns with the principal, including damage, smoking, or fire regulation issues.
- Carry out small repairs on buildings, equipment, and machinery, including plumbing, electrical work, paint touch-ups, furniture repair, and boarding broken windows.
- Service equipment, machinery, and systems by replacing filters, belts, and performing basic lubrication tasks.
- Run the school heating system, including start-up, shut-down, filter changes, lubrication, and monitoring; attend the school on weekends and holidays as needed to ensure proper operation.
- Manage the school security system, including door and window checks, lighting control, and activation of the security system at the end of the shift.
- Respond to fire, security, and other after-hours events as requested.
- Track cleaning and maintenance inventory, including preparing requisitions and receiving and storing supplies.
- Prepare and keep accurate records such as Ministry reports, online work requests, incident reports, fire regulation logs, security system reports, weekly fire alarm checks, and water flushing and salting/sanding logs.
- Follow WHMIS requirements and ensure chemicals are labeled, used, and stored safely according to Material Safety Data Sheets, including use of computer-based MSDS references.
- Use safe work procedures and ensure protective equipment is worn and maintained.
- Help the principal conduct fire drills, safety audits, and workplace inspections.
- Complete other duties assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance, Principal, or designate.
