About the Company

Deep Sky is working on climate solutions at the leading edge of carbon removal. At Deep Sky Alpha, described as the world’s first carbon removal innovation and commercialization hub, the team is building and running advanced Direct Air Capture systems that pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The Innisfail, Alberta site combines several DAC technologies from global innovators in an active operating facility.

Role Summary

The Plant Operator will be a practical, hands-on contributor supporting the launch and day-to-day operation of the Direct Air Capture plant in Innisfail. Reporting to the Head of Operations, this position involves safely running equipment, watching process conditions, and solving operational issues across capture and regeneration systems while helping drive continuous improvement. The role is full time, follows a 7 days on / 7 days off rotating schedule, and includes both day and night shifts in an industrial environment where PPE is required.

Key Duties

  • Run DAC process equipment, including sorbent and regeneration systems, blowers, heat exchangers, compressors, pumps, and supporting plant assets.
  • Assist with commissioning and startup work such as pre-start inspections, functional tests, flushes, and coordination with engineering teams.
  • Keep process conditions stable by reviewing flow, temperature, pressure, and gas composition, then taking the needed control actions.
  • Investigate mechanical, electrical, and process problems; carry out fixes where possible or work with maintenance staff to resolve them.
  • Complete regular safety and operations checklists, site rounds, and log entries, and promptly report anything unusual.
  • Handle routine mechanical upkeep, small adjustments, and minor repairs as needed.
  • Review equipment performance, monitor KPIs, and flag signs of degradation or improvement opportunities.
  • Follow SOPs, lockout/tagout procedures, permit-to-work requirements, and all other safety rules.
  • Take part in startup and post-startup testing, data gathering, and root-cause analysis.
  • Contribute to improvement projects and operator training, including mentoring newer operators.
  • Carry out other plant-related tasks assigned to support project and operational goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid 4th Class Power Engineering certification is mandatory.
  • Five to ten years of experience in commissioning, startup, and plant operations within industrial process facilities.
  • Background in gas handling, thermal regeneration, chemical processing, or air separation systems is preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic ability with proven mechanical aptitude.
  • Practical experience working with pumps, compressors, blowers, heat exchangers, valves, instrumentation, and basic electrical controls.
  • Ability to assess equipment condition and interpret process data.
  • Comfort with outdoor work, working at heights, and physically demanding tasks.
  • Good communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and openness to learning new technologies.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, be on call, and adjust hours during commissioning periods.

Preferred Background

  • Exposure to carbon capture, adsorption/desorption processes, or CO2 handling.
  • Familiarity with DCS or PLC systems, PID control, and basic process simulation or data analysis tools.
  • Additional trade certification such as millwright, mechanic, or electrician, or further power engineering training.

Why This Role Stands Out

This is an opportunity to join a mission-led team tackling climate change through advanced technology. The role offers the chance to work in a dynamic, innovative environment with competitive pay, benefits, and room for professional growth.

Application Note

Candidates should submit a resume along with a summary of their qualifications and interest in the position.
