Role overview
The Ministry of Education New Zealand is hiring a Psychologist for a fixed-term, full-time parental leave cover position based in Whakatāne, Bay of Plenty. The contract runs from August 2026 through February 2027.
This position sits within a close, community-oriented Learning Support team focused on improving learning outcomes and strengthening social inclusion for children and young people who have learning support needs.
The role is based in Whakatāne, one of New Zealand’s sunniest locations, and may also suit applicants living in Tauranga, Rotorua, or nearby Bay of Plenty areas who are willing to commute.
What you will do
- Identify patterns and contributing factors that affect learning, wellbeing, and behaviour.
- Support inclusive practices across early learning settings, schools, and other education environments.
- Offer professional guidance to schools, teachers, and families, helping build the capability of those supporting children and young people.
- Carry out in-depth specialist assessment and analysis to inform evidence-based interventions.
- Work collaboratively in a trans-disciplinary team when a child’s needs are more complex.

The team works alongside families, whānau, caregivers, schools, early childhood educators, and other agencies across English-medium and Māori-medium settings to improve learning outcomes and promote inclusion.
Salary and employment details
This is a fixed-term, full-time job with parental leave cover for approximately six months, ending in February 2027. The pay range is NZD 85,416 to NZD 126,000 per year plus KiwiSaver, with the final salary set according to the candidate’s skills and experience.
Who should apply
