Role overview
Due to ongoing growth in the UK, the business is seeking extra support for upcoming projects. The Quality Engineer will be responsible for helping ensure that project outputs meet demanding standards for quality, compliance, and performance. This position sits within a collaborative quality function and works closely with engineering, operations, service management, and project teams to keep delivery aligned with the Quality Management System (QMS), company policies, relevant standards, and recognised industry practices.
Key responsibilities
- Support the understanding, adjustment, implementation, and upkeep of the QMS in line with ISO 9001 and contractual obligations.
- Create, update, and manage quality procedures, plans, and related documentation.
- Schedule and carry out internal audits to check compliance with established procedures, regulations, and standards.
- Examine project documents and reports before approval to confirm quality requirements are met.
- Build and maintain the Contract Quality Control Plan in line with service milestones and project schedules.
- Oversee verification work and final outputs before they are accepted by the customer.
- Log, monitor, and close non-conformities, including corrective and improvement actions.
- Track quality results and measure progress against defined quality objectives.
- Review performance indicators, analyse trends, and recommend corrective actions where needed.
- Manage supplier and subcontractor quality by setting up a Supplier Quality Plan, including inspections and supplier audits.
- Assess supplier performance data to spot trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Facilitate lessons-learned reviews and make sure findings are documented, shared, and applied.
- Measure the cost of poor quality and related corrective action costs.
- Carry out root cause analysis and drive lasting solutions that prevent repeat issues.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality Assurance, or a similar field.
- At least 5 years’ experience in a Quality Engineer or QA Specialist role on complex technical projects.
- Experience with UK public-sector clients, preferably in transport or infrastructure settings.
- Quality management certifications such as IRCA Internal Auditor ISO 9001 or ASQ Certified Quality Engineer.
- Knowledge of service management, such as ITIL Foundation or an equivalent qualification.
- Strong understanding of international and UK quality management standards.
- Proven experience leading or coordinating cross-functional teams.
- Excellent analytical ability and a structured approach to problem-solving.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to work with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to capture undocumented knowledge through interviews and workshops.
- Confident decision-making under pressure, with experience handling incidents and conflict while supporting continuous improvement.
- Highly organised, detail-focused, and able to manage several priorities at once.
