Role overview
This position is focused on safeguarding the performance, availability, and reliability of mechanical assets across a large operational network that includes 10 depots, 2 plants, and 547 fuel service stations. The role is responsible for reducing equipment downtime, protecting business continuity, and driving continuous improvement in mechanical systems after handover of new facilities. It also involves providing specialist engineering guidance for maintenance, fault-finding, repairs, overhauls, shutdowns, and the upkeep of static and rotating equipment to industry-leading standards.
Core accountabilities
- Participate in reviewing mechanical layouts, technical specifications, SAFOP / E-HAZOP studies, operability and maintainability reviews, and related design workshops, contributing site knowledge to improve existing systems.
- Assess system adequacy and recommend upgrades or modifications to address operational and maintenance constraints.
- Support technical performance analysis, including reliability, availability, integrity, and investigation of equipment failure gaps.
- Define scope for major overhauls, work service orders, and mini-projects, while coordinating execution with other sections.
- Evaluate bid documents for services and materials, join clarification meetings with contractors and vendors, and prepare technical appraisal and evaluation reports.
- Review and update technical drawings to ensure the as-built condition matches design and technical requirements.
- Build effective working relationships across disciplines, site teams, and project interfaces.
- Prepare and present progress updates, proposals, requirements documents, and presentations to site and interface teams to help accelerate project delivery.
- Improve equipment performance by applying condition-based maintenance methods.
- Provide expert support to site maintenance teams using practical, experience-based engineering knowledge.
- Contribute to reliability studies for brownfield and greenfield assets, including review of maintenance strategies, troubleshooting support, root cause analysis, and reliability audits.
- Lead major mechanical activities so that operational and maintenance KPIs are met or exceeded.
- Take part in technical review meetings, site surveys, factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests, installation checks, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and handover activities.
- Ensure equipment-related documentation, procedures, and spare parts records are properly established, maintained, and transferred after completion of works.
- Oversee commissioning and handover of new facilities, resolving maintenance, design, operational, and warranty-related issues with stakeholders.
- Support troubleshooting after major works by coordinating with vendors and support teams to reduce downtime after failures or breakdowns.
- Track punch list items through to closure with the engineering and execution teams.
- Support mechanical control system actions and follow-up items requested by operations.
- Develop technical solutions that strengthen reliability performance of mechanical equipment and systems.
- Identify training needs to keep technical knowledge current and practical.
- Plan and coordinate shutdown work, in-house activities, projects, and campaigns with support units and contractors to reduce operational impact.
- Oversee predictive and reliability-centered maintenance programs for condition monitoring of equipment.
- Build and optimize support from vendors, OEMs, and specialist contractors.
- Contribute to maintenance planning by reviewing expected needs for overhauls, repairs, maintenance, and spare parts.
Additional technical responsibilities
- Carry out residual life assessments for critical equipment and recommend corrective actions to the relevant engineers or maintenance teams.
- Conduct site engineering studies to assess modifications that could improve plant reliability and efficiency.
- Provide input for updates to company standards and specifications based on industry developments and lessons learned.
- Lead troubleshooting for complex engineering issues and deliver safe, effective solutions.
- Witness FAT, SAT, pre-commissioning, and commissioning activities to verify compliance with approved documents and technical requirements.
- Ensure mechanical assets are managed in line with HSECES guidelines and minimum assurance task requirements.
- Review and advise on material stock and specification updates, including obsolescence, deletion, and addition of new items to secure spare parts availability.
- Monitor contractor performance through audits and weekly meetings, identifying gaps and recommending improvements under service agreements.
- Perform root cause failure analysis, identify recurring bad actors, and implement corrective actions to prevent repeat failures.
- Ensure reliable integration of new, modified, or upgraded facilities into existing operations.
- Prepare monthly and annual management information reports, including expenditure summaries and other presentation materials as required.
- Coordinate with the Projects Division on studies, site issues, and project scope development.
- Develop and apply engineering standards and procedures in line with corporate policy, industry codes, and international and domestic standards.
- Coach and mentor maintenance supervisors and technicians to strengthen technical capability and provide day-to-day engineering direction.
- Assess designs, review concepts, evaluate new technologies and products, and recommend improvements aligned with best practices.
Qualification and experience
A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent professional qualification, is required. The role calls for at least 10 years of experience in mechanical maintenance engineering involving rotating and static equipment, preferably within the oil and gas sector.
Applicants should have strong working knowledge of rotating and static equipment used in oil and gas plants, along with hands-on exposure to machine tooling, bench fitting, fabrication, welding, rigging, repairs, and related mechanical work. A solid understanding of predictive maintenance, specifications, codes, standards, mechanical safety, HSE practices, RCA, RCM, bad actor identification, RAM methodology, scheduling, coordination, record-keeping, and technical documentation is expected.
Working knowledge expected
The position requires the ability to interpret and work with engineering data such as blueprints, datasets, specifications, diagrams, and schematics in order to analyse, support, and develop technical solutions.
